Barack Hussein Obama is the President of the United States of America. Rightly or wrongly, controversy seems to follow this man. Whether its the blunder of not putting his hand over his heart at Tom Harkins picnic back in 2008 or jumping to conclusions about the police acting "stupidly" in the Harvard Law Professor story that led to the infamous beer summit in 2009, its clear that this is an imperfect human, to be sure.

One of the privileges of serving as our Commander in Chief is that he gets to work out of the historic Oval Office. A uniquely built room where the leader of the free world does most of his work.

One is expected to carry themselves with a sense of respect and dignity while in such a place. Especially the highest elected official in all the land. This particular Oval Office has been in service since 1934 when FDR was president. The history this room has witnessed is impressive, to say the least. It may be the most famous room in America.

It was with great disdain that I noticed a thread on facebook recently focused on this picture:

A picture of President Obama discussing something with a group of advisers doesn't seem unusual, does it? No, of course not. What's noteworthy is where President Obama's feet are. ON TOP OF THE FAMOUS RESOLUTE DESK!!! Most of us were raised to not put our feet on the furniture as kids, right? Right. Its disrespectful to do something like this. You can only imagine the outrage reflected in the comments on that FB thread.

You can always tell what way an essay is going to go when you see Obama's middle name used.

The ultimate power position. Only thing missing is his hands interlocked behind his head. I'd say he's snuggled into the role of The Most Powerful Man in the World quite well.

In that same article it shows pictures of other presidents doing it... two of them being Bush. And there is a stripper women on it... too... interesting. But yea, I do think its disrespectful, but whatever.

You know an article about the President is going to be devoid of intellect when it begins Hussein Obama. The Radical right is pathetic.

I'm trying to remember if the photo of Kennedy with his kids crawling under the desk had his feet up. I just read an article in today's local paper (by Esther Cepeda) where she opined that people have shown more lack of respect for Obama than any other previous president. We may have not shared the politics of other presidents, but we respected the office.

Unbelievably stupid thread. Just ridiculous.

If this is all you've got, Obama wins by a landslide this fall.

So you don't think kids crawling around the desk is disrespectful, huh?

And here's how this stupid stinkhole of a thread ends:

They just hate that the President is black.

No... the kid's were crawling under the desk! There's disrespect for Obama for many reasons! What Kenvin said, being one reason. The thread isn't that stupid, if you read the whole article. It's irony.

Agreed, but I think the OP was just trying to be humerous and illustrate just how ridiculous some people can be over such small nitpicky things like the President putting his feet up on "his" desk. (I know, I know...it's a historic piece of furniture paid for with taxpayer dollars (...or was it? I think one of the posters to the article commented that the desk was donated from Queen Victoria), but the desk is in the Oval Office which is located in the White House. Thus, it's his desk...until he's no longer President.)

My hat's off to the article itself for also showing former Presidents who did it before Obama. Otherwise, it would've been very foolish (not to mention very hypercrytical) to condemn President Obama for being "so illmannered" but give his predecessors a pass. Thus, it doesn't surprise me in the least to see anti-Obama supporters voicing their outrage over this but have "no comment" when they're reminded that previous Republican Presidents once put their feet up on this famous piece of furniture as well.

Can't have it both ways, folks. Either it's illmannered behavior or you just let it go and consider it "acceptable" as long as it's done in your office and not on the living coffee table. Gotta keep it in perspective.

Okay, I see now. But the original idea behind it was indeed a stinkbomb.

No, you can't...

Thank you for reading my entire piece...I appreciate it.

I'm sure a lot worse things have heppened under the Resolute Desk - by presidents and others.

**** - I'd put my feet up too if I was the first female president!
