Sometimes, I think that Bush supporters have completely lost their collective mind. This is nutz - but I am open to hearing the Dubai Ports Grand Slam Theory, if you have one. | First, it's "woah."
Second, the deal was a great idea with a strong ally. Quote:
Reviews by U.S. intelligence agencies supported Dubai Ports World's purchase of the British company running terminals at six American seaports, and the assessments were made available to the Treasury Department-run interagency committee that approved the deal, according to senior administration officials.
...
While contents of the intelligence assessments remain classified, current and former intelligence officials yesterday spoke highly of the level of counterterrorism cooperation provided after Sept. 11, 2001, by Dubai and several of the other states that make up the United Arab Emirates.
...
He said that once the agency moved against Pakistani nuclear scientist Abdul Qadeer Khan and his black-market sales of nuclear technology, "they helped facilitate the CIA's penetration of Khan's network." Dubai also assisted in the capture of al-Qaeda terrorists. An al-Qaeda statement released in Arabic in spring 2002 refers to UAE officials as wanting to "appease the Americans' wishes" including detaining "a number of Mujahideen," according to captured documents made available last week by the Combating Terrorism Center at West Point. The al-Qaeda statement threatened the UAE, saying that "you are an easier target than them; your homeland is exposed to us."
One intelligence official pointed out that when the U.S. Navy no longer made regular use of Yemen after the USS Cole was attacked in 2000, it moved its port calls for supplies and repairs to Dubai.
Marine Corps Gen. Peter Pace, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, on Tuesday praised the "superb" military-to-military relationship with the UAE, saying, "In everything that we have asked and work with them on, they have proven to be very, very solid partners."

The reasons the deal failed were ignorance and xenophobia. Quote:
(stuff)
...
I’ve just outlined a conceptual plan that will turn our economy into a potential $16 - $18 Trillion hard-product producing economy delivering both energy products, services and infrastructure to the entire world, give us a multi-hundred billion dollar YoY real budget surplus and generate something on the order of 50,000,000 new jobs paying a real livable wage, while making more millionaires and more billionaires than American has ever seen and boosting the Middle Class both horizontally and vertically. Yet, you claim I don’t understand the Bush/Paulson proposal to bail-out the top 5% while doing nothing but resetting our bloated bad paper economy right back to where it was BEFORE the bubble burst.
| If only the rest of the world were composed of brilliant thinkers and skilled economists such as yourself. You've managed to fix the entire world's problems while simultaneously exposing the conspiracies to create the "Amero" and the "North American Union." Kudos.

Didn't talk to many foreign leaders (with GWB, that would have made matters worse)
Did not die in office and leave us with Cheney.

Did not die in office and leave us with Cheney. | He also helped us to get rid of that pesky huuuuuge surplus Clinton bequeathed him.

Current Mood: | Re: What has George W. Bush Done A Good Job At? He improved his golf swing.
Set a record for longest and most vacation time of any President ever.
He spent money faster and more of it than all the other Presidents combined.
He faked a war for personal reasons.
"After all, he tried to kill my daddy at one time." - Bush about Saddam.
He tried to hijack our social security funds, but failed. Oh that doesn't count as a good job, since he failed.
I can't think of anything positive. He's a miserable President and human being and if any President is to be considered the anti-Christ, he would be it. |
