Yes, your question is very valid and very much germane to this particular election cycle. This question was also valid as it relates to the infamous
Bradley Effect. It is sad that society even has names for these things as if they were some kind of esoteric mathematical compilation of theory involving the extreme depths of quantum physics or biological chemistry. The Bradley Effect, ranks right up there with the Big Rip Theory. Of course, as human beings, we don’t want either of those two theories to be removed from the realm of theory and placed into the category of fact.
Having said that, this can’t help but be an issue in 2008. Why? Because, on par, America has never dealt with its racist past and the completely dehumanizing affect that the American Slave Trade had on not only Africans and African Americans, but on the owners of Slaves as well. This issues has never been justly resolved in American society.
Just take a look at what happened recently in the McCain camp. He had to fire yet another staffer, this time a Mexican American Female, who said that she did not want to see the Republican Party do to Mexican Americans, what the Democratic Party has done to ‘them’. She went on to say that the Democratic Party was responsible for turning African Americans into welfare junkies and basically, people just looking for a hand-out. What’s more, she said that applied to “all” African Americans. So, according to this McCain camp staffer, there are no African Americans outside the welfare system.
It is this kind of blatant stupidity that racism brings and has brought to America since the first Slave stepped off the first Slave ship on the eastern seaboard. Even ‘some’ (not all, of course) minorities and immigrants who benefit from the sacrifices made by millions of African Americans before them, including all of those African Americans who lost their lives form the period after 1865 through Jim Crowe and during the Civil Rights epoch in American history, have jumped on the bandwagon of racial bigotry and repeat the same mistakes made by their White counterparts of the past.
You would think that other minorities in this country, would get up to speed on where their rights come from in the United States of America and realize that it was African American blood that got shed such that they (minorities) no longer have to encounter Whites Only signage wherever they go in public places. Or, so that they (minorities) can be considered for employment, housing and education without the color of their non-white skin, being a legal stumbling block to their own “pursuit of happiness.” Yet, many minorities have no clue about where their freedoms come from in the United States of America, and who paid the ultimate price to make those freedoms a reality long before any other minorities were large components of our population.
Having said that, there would be no way possible for Barack Obama to have come this far in his bid for the White House, unless a whole lot of White folks show their ultimate support for him. So, that is something that I find rather interesting and very encouraging as it relates to America dealing with its racist past. Maybe this will be America’s way of saying, “hey, look – we made a horrible mistake by allowing American Slavery to continue. But, today, we all stand as one people and we recognize that the best candidate during this election cycle is Barack Obama and we won’t let our preconceptions get in the way of making it abundantly clear that America no longer tolerates the sins of the past, found in our Slave Trade history.”
If Obama wins by that landslide that I’ve been predicting since 2007, while at the same time turning some Blue States into Red States as he does it, then that will certainly send a strong signal to the remaining bigots among us that race should never be an issue in any quarter of America anymore.
We shall see. But, you do have a valid point. Just remember, that he can’t win without a ton of White support – and I mean a TON of White supporters. And, from what I can see thus far, he’s got plenty of it.
Not every White person in America is a dumb idiot racist. Most White folks are not like that at all, but you still do have that Confederate mentality running around the countryside blowing stuff up every now and then, just to prove that the idiocy quotient is still fairly palatable in this country. But, again, most White People are fair, decent and honest.
I have faith in my country to do the right thing on November 4th, 2008. There could be no clearer choice. Obama/Biden is the ticket to support – The People just have to make it happen.
