Current Mood: | Who started Cold War II? The "arrogant folly" of the Bushneviks has come home to roost. Yes, they egged on Georgia to invade South Ossetia and Abkhazia, and it came back to bite them on the butt. Had either of these regions been a member of NATO, like the Neocons wanted, we would be either engaged in WWIII at this very moment, or possibly trying to pick up the pieces of what is left of civilization, attemptnig to recover from a nuclear holocaust, as part of the "Second Stone Age".
There is a damn good reason that Eisenhower, Reagan, and other presidents stayed out of many foreign entanglements. The vital interests of the United States were not on the line, nor are they on the line now. What the Neocons are trying to do, encircling Russia, and beating the war drums, is equivalent to poking a hornet's nest with a stick. Just as the United States won't stand to see it's security threatened, neither will Russia, and Russia will be just as determined to fight to the bitter end as we are - nuclear weapons included.
As for Saakashvili, his policial career is toast. As the author of the article recommends, let him now find an endowed chair at the American Enterprise Institute, where he can sit along side of the rest of the crazies in the basement. Article is here.

Please reply to the topic, and per rule 4 of the DP rules, don't be such a freaking jerk. |

The world has changed so much since the last one. We are no longer ideologically opposed to the Russian system of politics (Our corporate rulers don't care about democracy, or lack thereof). Russian Oil looms large in this picture. China is a new factor. |

| Re: Who started Cold War II? Whether you want to call it a cold war or not, there can be no doubt that since Bush took over the relationship with Russia has deteriorated badly, and it can be traced directly to unnecessary provocation by the Bush administration.
How do you think the US would react if the Russias started arming and training Venezuela or Mexico and building missle "defense" systems there?
It shouldn't surprise anyone that the two countries that are the flash points, Georgia and Poland, were two of the coalition of the "willing" that provided significant combat troops. Now its quid pro quo time. Payback for the Iraq war, at the cost of a new cold war.

As for the present, the deterioration of US-Russian relations is at least as much George Bush's fault as it is Vladimir Putin's. Both of them have engaged in irresponsible decisions that antagonized the other country while bringing little benefit to their own. I see relations improving markedly as of January 2009, regardless of who is elected president.
