Gender: | Bush criticizes Congress over vacation, goes on vacation [qutoe]Yesterday, President Bush criticized Congress for taking a “five-week vacation” without voting on offshore oil drilling, despite the fact that he spent this week at the Olympics (while Russia and Georgia went to war). Today, Dana Perino announced that after a “day or two” delay because of the war, Bush will spend two weeks at his ranch in Crawford, TX:
President Bush is scheduled to leave tomorrow for Crawford, but he is going to delay his departure for a day or two. YouTube - Bush to go on vacation after criticizing Congress's recess [/quote]

Lean: Conservative Gender: | Re: Bush criticizes Congress over vacation, goes on vacation Look guys, I am FAR from being a GWB fan and yes, aps, January can't come soon enough.... BUT...
1) Is there anything that the President cannot do in Crawford that he'd be can do on Pennsylvania Avenue? Here's a big volleyball set for you Bush Bashers...
2) And, Congress CAN'T do anything when all 535 of them are scattered about the country...
I think it's a valid criticism of Congress from Bush regardless of where he made it. Just my two cents worth...

Just my two cents worth... | Well, I believe he now holds the record for taking the most vacation time of any president. I agree--he can do his job while in Crawford; however, it appears that he doesn't give his job the attention that it needs at special times. For example, he received the following memo on August 6, 2001, WHILE HE WAS ON VACATION and then 9-11 occurred. White House Releases Pre-9/11 Intel Memo - April 10, 2004
Sorry, reaganburch, but he has shown he can't do his job while in Crawford. I'm not saying he could have prevented 9-11, but he did NOTHING in taking any steps regarding airport security. |

I'm not saying he could have prevented 9-11, but he did NOTHING in taking any steps regarding airport security. | ALL valid criticisms, aps... He's shown that he really isn't able to do his job well regardless of where he's at, Crawford, Washington, Europe, Asia, etc.
However, I do wonder... out loud... what these 'vacations' are like. Are they like the ones you and I take where we go to the beach or somewhere like that, turn our cell phones off and tune out the world? Or, are they, more like where he takes phone calls to start the day, does some other Presidential work, then goes out and clears his land for a while, comes back in takes some phone calls, signs some papers, takes some more phone calls, goes to bed and does it all over again...
That's more of what I'm getting at, not whether he's competent to do his job, for the most part he isn't, but that he's ABLE to do his job. If he is, then he can legitimately criticize Congress for skipping out of town where they're definately not able to do their job... not that Congress is competent, either. But, that's a topic for a whole other debate...
I guess what I'm trying to say, I don't know well or not, that there's plenty of other topics to criticize GWB on, I'm just not sure this is one of them... I personally think he's in the right here. |

We are at war, our economy sucks, and Congress decides to STILL take a vacation? What about sacrifices? It's not like they're not handsomely paid for their crappy work. |

I'd be happy on January 2009, to kick all the bastards out of Washington, Democrats, Republicans, Independents, etc, and start from scratch, but I know that's not going to happen so all I can do is just shake my head and say "This is the best we can do as a country, huh?" |
