Save the Planet? How About Saving the Republic?

Recently, during the "drilling debates", Nancy Pelosi made the statement that she was trying to save the planet. But here is the problem - Not Pelosi, not Obama, not McCain, not Bush, in fact not too many Democrats or Republicans understand or appreciate the gift that was handed down to us by our forefathers - A Republic, owned by the American people. In the most cynical way, the Republicrats, as I now call them, are giving it away to special interests, who in turn, promise them power.

At the risk of sounding trite, let me repeat an old adage - Power corrupts. Absolute power corrupts absolutely. We have seen this first hand with Bush, and yes, with Clinton before him. Our two major parties are hellbent on taking America away from its people, and this is something that has to change. Our forefathers, in giving us the gift that made America so great, also warned us about losing it. In fact, Ben Franklin, when asked what kind of government we were going to have, replied "A Republic, if we can keep it". Well, can we? That is the question that will ultimately make or break the America of the future.

I don't agree eye to eye with Chuck Baldwin, the Constitution Party candidate, on some issues, but I must say that he has hit a home run with this piece. Read it and then know of the crisis that now faces America - It is a crisis perpetuated by power hungry Republicans and Democrats, who are wiping their collective a$$es with the great documents our forefathers bequeathed to us. Those collective a$$es, both Democratic and Republican, need to be back out on the street, and as far away from the center of our system of government as possible. They are not our masters, but our servants, and we can fire them at will. All we need is the will.

Re: Save the Planet? How About Saving the Republic?

The thought that the people have the power to change the constant drift away from the Consitutionally based nation we once were is quaint. We do not choose our leaders, we pick which ones we prefer out of the choices presented to us by the two major political parties.

The two elected branches of government have a combined approval rating of less then 1 in 4. The opinion of the people clearly has no bearing on the policies of the nation. All we can hope for is that the next set of rulers decides to make more popular moves. If not, there isn't a whole lot we can do (or will do)

Charity begins at home, and so does salvation. We need to save OUR PART of the planet, and let the rest of it go it on their own.

Re: Save the Planet? How About Saving the Republic?

And I have been seeing this going on for a while and it really Pi$$' me off, how could my neighbors let this happen and how could I (because I am also part of the problem) help to stop this, change our course? I think we need to ask, how can I or better yet, how can "WE" fix this problem of our country's rape and erosion? I want to run for office, I want to help correct the wrongs... I'm going to run for Senetor! When you hear the name William Freeman, remember the last name, and what it stands for, because that is what I will be fighting for, the freedom of all!
Consider this an official anouncment to run for office in the future (after the military, it's illiegal for me to run right now)

Great article. Baldwin definitely hit a grand slam on that one.

Re: Save the Planet? How About Saving the Republic?

Our politicians are a joke. The whole process is broken, if it ever really worked at all. Special Interests have always, and certainly now, run the politicians and the people have almost no voice at all, that is unless they can get a lobbyist of their own.

It is a joke, but not one that we can or should laugh at. It is sad. What are the people supposed to do? Take up armed rebellion like Jefferson said? The US citizens are certainly being oppressed by tyranical means, but it is being done in the clever 20th century way. Just like the Romans did when the masses were starving, they gave them the Games and the Gladiators... well, now we have American Idol, Access Hollywood and Survivor, along with worrying more about Monica Lewisnki than any paramount issue like economics or foreign relations.

Sad. I can't get over it. Seriously.

Re: Save the Planet? How About Saving the Republic?

I would like if we could maybe switch it up a little bit by making third parties viable. Sadly they aren't really right now and changing our current system to make it easier for third parties to get elected doesn't seem very likely with the two major parties in control.

You are blaming the symptom instead of the disease. People get the government they deserve. The US voters have put these jerks in office and keep reelecting them. The politicians are acting very rationally.

Paraphrasing someone, 'Democracy fails when people learn they can vote themselves money from other people's pockets.' That is what has been happening in the US for some time and all the trends show it will only increase.

BTW, just a reminder. The leason learned by the Repubs when the Demos win big in Nov will be that they need to move farther left.

You, as a US citizen, are on the wrong side of history so you might as well get used to it.

The veracity of the quote itself is subject to some criticism.

Seems spot on to me though.
