On May 9, 2007, Bush issued an executive order which would allow him to suspend elections, in case of a national emergency.
Suppose there is a terrorist attack this October - Would Bush then suspend the elections "for the good of the nation"? If he did, how long would he suspend them for? If, as he says, we are in a war that could last many years, there is technically a possibility that Bush could remain president for a while longer, that is, until he is impeached and thrown out of office. I don't even see avid Bush supporters on his side with this one, which is why nothing will probably happen, even if there IS a terrorist attack before the election. However, The May 9, 2007 directive is bone chilling, and if not for Bush's lousy approval ratings, I would be a little uneasy about it.

Maybe the president could issue that order, and if a majority of the Supreme Court agrees that an emergency exists, then it would be postponed for a couple weeks.
It's definitely a good idea to have some kind of a contingency plan in place. Suppose there was a 9/11 a few hours before the polls opened on Election Day, or one of the presidential candidates was assassinated. It wouldn't make sense to expect people to vote under those circumstances. |

Edit: Also, they would still have two and a half months before inauguration. Bush couldn't go more than two years extra. But they should be able to hold an election in 2 1/2 months.
