I'm not sure that cartoon quite captures all the nuances of the debate. |

I'm not sure that cartoon quite captures all the nuances of the debate. | Oh, I'm sure it does.
If my family could locate the descendants of our slaves, we'd gladly pay them reparations.
I'm sure that some of them are still right here in the area, and I wish they'd track us down, and come forward.
Some of my elder family members have recently been making noises about trying to locate them through old estate sale records and these new genealogy websites they have on the internet.
I know the idea of slavery reparations is not a popular one, and most white people seem to think it's a joke, but I can assure you the curse of slavery sits heavily upon my family, and all the remaining family members I have left are totally onboard with the idea.

Current Mood: | Re: A COncise History of Black and White Relations in the US That's the beauty of being descended from relatively recent (late 1800's) Swedish immigrants: knowing that my family was completely innocent in the slave trade. Now there might have been some plundering and looting if you go back far enough... |

I don't think it would bother me *as much* if there were some distance, if it was all more or less theoretical; if my family, for instance, had used the money they earned through slavery to move away, to buy property in town that was never touched by or connected to the slaves in any way.
But the fact is, my family- dad, uncles, and aunts- still live on the piece of land that our great-great-grandparents once farmed using slaves.
And the slave cabins are still there, and we still use them.
Those are, in fact, the only original buildings left standing out there, since original family homestead burned down a long time ago.
We know the names of some of the slaves. We have artifacts- for lack of a better word- left behind by the slaves.
It's like, they're very real to me, to us. Even more so than our own ancestors, I think.
I think we relate more to the slaves, at least I know I do.
That's why I hope someday that we do track them down.
Even if they weren't interested in reparations, they might be interested in history, and we can share what history we have with them. |
