U.S. Homeland Security Issued Report on “Leftwing Extremists” in January

PoliGazette U.S. Homeland Security Issued Report on “Leftwing Extremists” in January

Quote:
The government released the report, entitled “Leftwing Extemists Likely to Increase Use of Cyber Attacks Over the Coming Decade,” on January 26, days after the current president was sworn into office. This is proof that the earlier report, at least, was started while the previous administration was in power. The existence of the earlier document also gives weight to the claims by some commentators in this Michael van der Galien’s article that the other report about rightwing extremists was also commissioned by the DHS during the Bush administration.

Indeed, the Fox News article reports that these have not necessarily been ordered by one administration or another, but is an ongoing series of analysis into all sorts of extremism:
Quote:
The report, issued last week, is part of an ongoing review of extremists on both ends of the political spectrum. [...]

DHS spokeswoman Sara Kuban said the April 7 assessment is one in an ongoing series published by DHS ”to facilitate a greater understanding of radicalization in the United States.” [...]

“This is the job of DHS, to assess what is happening in this country, with regard to homegrown terrorism, and determine whether it’s an actual threat or not, and that’s what these assessments do. This is nothing unusual. These assessments are done all the time. This is about awareness,” the official told FOX News on Monday.
Everyone who is freaking out about DHS secretly trying to round up all conservatives needs to get over it. This is a routine practice that is about as much of a non-issue as there can be.

Well left wing extremists really are dangerous.

That it is a routine practice is what makes it an issue to me.

People have a right to speak freely, assemble freely, and to even agitate against the government.

People have a right to denounce the government, and to call every aspect of it a moral evil.

Whether they champion Marxism and Maoism, total anarchy, or pastafarianism, they have the right to hold their views, even if those views are extreme.

Left-wing or right-wing is non-sequitur. People should not be profiled because of their political views.

The tenor of this report is not the same thing at all. This thing covers, in detail, actual crimes. The other report raises the spectre of danger based on Constitutionally-protected activity.

Can you indicate anything in either of these reports that abrogates a single right?

I agree that the tenor may be different, but I'd wager that many of the left-wingers who are happy about the most current report would be angry about this, and vice versa. Just saw this extra bit of info that surprised me and thought I'd share.

Well, the timing is interesting. If this one was promulgated on 1/26/09, it would indicate it survived mostly unchanged from the Bush DHS, if there were any changes at all.

But the other one, much more expansive, much more suspicious of legal, protected activity, spent at least a few months in the Obama DHS.

Now, there's no way to know what was changed/added and what wasn't; at least not at the moment.

But it's interesting nonetheless, and I don't think it's insignificant.

The reports exist. That alone is an unwarranted intrusion into most of the First Amendment rights.

Government has no right investigating anyone because they "may" commit a crime at some juncture in the future. Until a crime has been committed government needs to leave the citizens alone.

lol wut?

How is government documentation of something an intrusion into a first amendment right?

Setting aside the fact that this isn't true, can you tell me who exactly was harmed/suffered a violation of their rights because of this report?

Unless I'm mistaken and this report was accompanied by a rounding up of all conservatives, then they did "leave the citizens alone."
