World Agenda: Nicolas Sarkozy puts Barack Obama in the doghouse - Times Online

Mr Sarkozy is pouring cold water on President Obama's efforts to recast American leadership on the world stage, depicting them as unoriginal, unsubstantial and overrated. Behind leaks and briefings from the Elysée Palace lies Mr Sarkozy's irritation at the rock-star welcome that Europe gave Mr Obama on his Europan tour earlier this month.

The American President's call "to free the world of the menace of a nuclear nightmare" was hot air, Mr Sarkozy's diplomatic staff told him in a report. "It was rhetoric – not a speech on American security policy but an export model aimed at improving the image of the United States," they said. Most of Mr Obama's proposals had already been made by the Bush administration...

Well, at least not everyone is drinking the kool-aid and asking for more.

Well of course that's true, but so what? The United States NEEDS to have its image improved if we're going to get our policies implemented. It's very difficult to get the rest of the world to cooperate if they all hate us. A public relations tour on Obama's first trip abroad seems like a good idea to me.

I wouldn't give much time to Sarko. In my opinion he's worse than Obama, perhaps even Brown.

I love this bit

the French President is needled by the adulation for an unproven US leader whose stardom has eclipsed what he sees as his established record as a world troubleshooter.

Is this like his troubleshooting ideas on Ireland's pesky no vote on the Lisbon treaty? Let's give them referenda until they vote yes, they really want, they've just been misled.

England must leave the EUroplot now!

Pretty much unless Zimmer plans for the US to invade everyone and force them to do what we want at the end of the gun. The best leaders don't force or bully people into doing what they want.

What I don't get is why alleged Conservatives bash Obama for his nuclear weapons stance (which is virtually identical to McCain's I might add). They call for attacks on Iran and North Korea yet bash Obama for wanting to reduce proliferation. It just doesn't make sense from a rational pro-American view. Kissinger is unbelievably right when he noted that no nuclear weapons make US conventional military power hegemonic. Furthermore, showing true commitment to the NPT will entice others to actually follow it and not violate the rules. When the lead writer of the treaty actually commits with tangible results to its obligations, that's leadership from the front.

For people like Zimmer, they should be 100% on board with such a proposal. It seems that their sole reason against his policies is because his name is followed by a D rather than a R.

That's hyperpartisanism. Rejecting a good idea merely because the other party suggested it. And it's a key reason why America is so screwed up.

Point of the article is that the French President finds Obama to be a media orchestrated sham. A big mouthed blowhard with little to nothing but a glorified presence based on air.

A Charlatan.

I wouldn't doubt that sentiment is expressed across similar papers in every government involved in the G20 and events surrounding it.

Not nuclear weapons.

Curious that you would side with a French politician when he criticizes the American president.
Can you give an example of what you consider Obama being a "blowhard"? I think I missed that.

I lived in Europe for most of the year during the last half of the Reagan administration. The Euros hated him with the same passion they hated Bush 43.

They loved Gorby, Carter, and Clinton, just as they love Obama.
They LOVE weakness.
They LOVE Presidents that travel the world smashing the United States of America in the teeth... and then pissing in her mouth.

As for rest of the world... screw 'em... they have been wrong on most everything having to do with Foreign Relations during the last 40-years.

Why in the world should we bend over to these fools?

As George Washington stated:

It is better be alone than in bad company.

It is a maxim, founded on the universal experience of mankind, that no nation is to be trusted farther than it is bound by its interest; and no prudent statesman or politician will venture to depart from it.

Against the insidious wiles of foreign influence, (I conjure you to believe me fellow citizens) the jealousy of a free people ought to be constantly awake; since history and experience prove that foreign influence is one of the most baneful foes of Republican Government.
Now we have such a "bane", such a "foe" running the country; one who embraces foreign influence.
Someone "hostile" to Republican Government.

Sarkozy nailed the essence of Obama ... he's just like Clinton... gutless and all style over substance.

Our enemies... they must be licking their chops as they see through the facade... and right to the core of a man over eager to please.

You are hilarious. You know that? I almost spit my drink when I read that.

Not sure about that Reagan was at least popular with the thatcher supporters and there was alot of them in the UK.AS for the rest your europe there seems to have been a socialist bent which means they would be turned off by someone like Reagan.

True, true.

Sorry, I do not include the UK as Europe; as many on The Island don't.
I was speaking about the Continent.

Maggie was a tremendous partner.
If an American, I would have voted for her to be President in a heart beat.
God Bless her.

I suspect the Europeans, who are considerably more civilized than the fringe right, recognize that America finally has a leader with both intelligence and strength, someone who has got their back.

For our European readers, I assure you this "zimmer" is not representative of America, and we will not soon be returning to the days of bluster and random military action.

As for intelligence and strength... No. He fails on both counts. And Obama's primary obligation is to America, not Europe.

Who is representative of America? You? And what do you mean "random" military action?

I think you would be alone in pronouncing Obama a failure in exercising intelligence and strength. On the contrary, in the short time he has been in office he has demonstrated examples of both, all to the benefit of America.

Random military action? Mobilizing the American armed forces when it is not necessary.

Exactly. Kudos to Sarkozy.

The Obama News Media touted his european tour as a success. What a joke.

He came back emptied handed. Wait, he did manage to further burden the American taxpayer by committing to house and feed 5000 NATO troops to hand out donuts and coffee at the Afghan elections.

You gotta love his community organizing skills.

I disagree with everything you just said and I'm definitely not alone.

"Unnecessary" is subjective and is not a synonym for "random."

I gotta say, regardless of anything, its wonderful watching republicans applauding a French politician for his view and democrats criticizing a European and Frenchman for daring to say something bad about an American Politician.

Sarkozy was saying in polite diplomaticspeak that Dear Leader was talking out his ass.

Sad day when I have to agree with a Frenchman, but Sarkozy nailed it.

The Europeans are a highly intolerant lot.
Narrow minded with their mental DVD's fully loaded with socialist claptrap.

America had a leader of strength. Bush 43.
He didn't waver as the fools on the left and in Europe tried to secure defeat of our troops and country to a band of 7th Century morons.

Intelligence (and Judgment): If you think following Alinsky, Wright, Pfleger, Rezko, Ayers is "intelligent"... OK. We know you do or would love Marx and Lenin. It's really how you Euro's have been living anyway... though you probably didn't learn it in school.

For our European readers, I assure you this "zimmer" is not representative of America, and we will not soon be returning to the days of bluster and random military action.
Editor's Correction:
I am not representative of Hollyweird Amerika, Manhatten Amerika or any other bastions of Socialist Amerika.

Obama won, but nothing like Reagan, and Obama won with his Circus Show/Vaudeville Act. Let's be serious, Ferraro nailed precisely why Obama made it out of Iowa.

To my Euro buddies... I am like most of America... and...

We'll be back. :2wave:

PS. Did you notice Obama done blewed a bunch of Pakistani's to itty bitty pieces in their own country... in his first week?

Did you notice how Da Obaminator did not go to the UN or ask for foreign assistance or coalition to oust The Pirates?

No... random military action... did you know of the some 400+ Gitmo detainees released... 50 released have returned to battle. So... we are hoping you open minded, terror loving, pacifists in Europe will take them all... to show how good people you are. To show you're not like Bush's America. To show you are compassionate, open hearted loving folks... after all, you had a Domestic Terrorist forming a coalition government in Germany... and you release terrorists that killed people and wreaked mayhem.

So... you'll take the Gitmo terrorists?
All of them?
Because you care about their health and well being?

Deal?

.
