This issue is one of Trumps primary planks, and it is a very difficult one. These are my thoughts on the situation and how it should be handled, and I feel that many if not most of these immigrants could easily be won to the GOP point of view if we handle it with care.
The Wall - I find it hard to believe that we are going to build a wall across our entire southern border. Maybe for some stretches a wall makes sense. But that is neither here nor there. We can strengthen a virtual wall to the point where very few will make it across without our consent. So we shouldn't be hanging our hats on the physical wall. We should just do a great job at patrolling and enforcing our sovereignty as a nation. We can do that. The goal is to allow those in that we approve, and keep those out that we do not.

Legal immigration - We need to streamline the process, read: Speed it up. There are plenty of folks around the world that want to come here, and we want them here. They bring education, skills, and a desire to work that this country needs. We are poised on the brink of a huge labor shortage over the next few generations, and if you haven't noticed, our younger generation is not full of folks ready to work hard. I have seen again and again our kids not getting their first job until their mid-twenties. 40 years ago every kid I knew in high school had a job or was trying hard to get one. We've lost that will somehow, likely because we've spoiled our kids endlessly.
So we need skilled and motivated workers. Let's bring in the best.

Hispanics that are here illegally - We are not going to deport 30 million people, ripping families apart. They are here, for the most part they are working hard, and to send them back is going to make enemies of them, including their citizen children for life. Give them a quick path to citizenship. Win them to the GOP for life. In just a few generations they will probably be the deciding factor in elections going forward. They are already strong. Let's not be idiots in dealing with this group of people. They are hard working, love God for the most part, and have strong families and good ethics. These ARE the citizens we want to let in.
As far as the law breakers are concerned, send them back where they came from, no questions asked. Get rid of them. Lock them up. We have plenty of citizens in this country that are bad folks. We know how to handle them. Do the same for criminal illegals, and quite equating them with the majority of Hispanic immigrants that are good hard working people.

We need to get this done for the good of the country and the good of the party. There will be enough jobs for everyone here before long. Trump will undue the regulatory shackles that have hamstrung this country for the last decade. We have enough resource and opportunity to make this happen. To let this opportunity slip away is to ensure the destruction of the party. And it will certainly piss of the liberals. ;)

Trump could certainly underline his reputation for being capricious by embracing the illegals and making them citizens.

Re: Let's talk about Hispanic immigrants GOP

I think we need to solve our federal problems at the federal borders with the federal powers already delegated.

An economic "wall" or barrier to entry will work better than a physical wall. A market friendly work visa program can make that happen, and generate revenue to defray the cost of government.

A very rational approach that a lot of people could get onboard with.

No, I think the whole wall thing is ridiculous. But it doesn't even make my top 10 list of reasons I didn't vote for Trump.

I'm not a fan of the wall but if it comes with a streamlined immigration process I'll take it.

Re: Let's talk about Hispanic immigrants GOP

First of all we must establish why we have so many illegals in this country. Who benefits, who looked the other way, what's the draw? Are we making it too difficult for legal immigrants and too easy for illegals? Isn't it a slap in the face of law abiding immigrants to wait their turn just to have masses of people cater to illegals, languages being the first concern?
What if...we do away with what draws people here illegally and what if we tightened our rear ends a bit?
Who's fault is it that families might be "ripped apart"? Isn't that a risk illegals took when gambling with their future and the future of their kids? If their allegiance is family and family unity, their home country should take them back, all of them, those who are illegal along with their anchors.
Actions have consequences.

The amusement park business model will work; we have over six billion potential market participants. With a fee as low as five hundred dollars, we could fund unemployment compensation for native labor until they can compete more successfully.

I have been debating what was said; I am arguing my point. They don't have any valid rebuttals. Fallacy is all they have; along with whining about it.

That might work as well but here is the thing. We just had an election. And we lost. Republicans control everything now. We are going to have to get what we want within the scope of their plans.

This is a great approach and I am thankful you recognize many are hardworking family oriented who just want a better shot at life. A "virtual wall" is much more logical and cost effective solution and much less divisive.

We agree there. Nothing wrong with immigrants. Immigrants have played a big part in this country's success. We should make it easy for productive immigrants to come legally and make it nearly impossible for criminal elements to come at all. Big challenge.

Re: Let's talk about Hispanic immigrants GOP

Trump could certainly underline his reputation for being capricious by embracing the illegals and making them citizens.

How did that work out for Reagan? Why would it turn out different this time?

I can get down with that.

Re: Let's talk about Hispanic immigrants GOP

The problem is that illegal immigrants are here is because the risk of deportation is minimal. The solution would be to pass laws to make it undesirable to just run over the border.

1) Pass a law that charges draconian penalties on businesses that employ illegal immigrants.
2) Deny illegal aliens access to all public services except life-threatening ones. That includes schools, and all entitlements.
3) Children born in this country take their mother's current citizenship. Not a citizen? Neither is your kid. Citizen? Your kid is one too. Become a citizen? Your kid becomes one too.

Remember...none of these affect those who come through the border legally. These only affect the border jumpers.

Re: Let's talk about Hispanic immigrants GOP

How did that work out for Reagan? Why would it turn out different this time?

How many were there then and how was the exact legal structure used?

Re: Let's talk about Hispanic immigrants GOP

How did that work out for Reagan? Why would it turn out different this time?

Without a secure border, it won't work.

Re: Let's talk about Hispanic immigrants GOP

It would probably have worked out better if Liberals would not undermine our laws regarding sovereignty.
It just stands to reason that we can only take in so many immigrants without really hurting our current citizenry.
They ARE going to take jobs. They say these are jobs we won't do, but in my early adulthood I was a: Janitor, tree trimmer, window cleaner, etc. All jobs that now you would be hard pressed to find an American doing.
There is a rational limit to how many we let in. There is no reason in the world they should all be Hispanic.
It would be nice if they flew an American flag once they get here vs. the Mexican flag. That is going to alienate them from our process, certainly. Great that you love Mexico. Do you love America too? If not, why do you want to be here?
If you want to take Cali / Texas back (into Mexico), then declare war and let's work it out La Raza.

If all folks involved wanted to work this out in a reasonable rational fashion we could get it done. Some just want more than they are going to get, and they don't seem to know that.

Re: Let's talk about Hispanic immigrants GOP

Let the ones that are here now....... stay!

Kick out the ones that are criminals.

And then...................fix the ****ing border situation for good this time!

Re: Let's talk about Hispanic immigrants GOP

How many were there then and how was the exact legal structure used?

Don't know. I'll look it up.

In the mean time, do you have an answer to what I asked?

How did that work out for Reagan? Why would it turn out different this time?

Re: Let's talk about Hispanic immigrants GOP

Without a secure border, it won't work.

Exactly right. The wall has to be step one, and stand on its own. The wall should not be part of some comprehensive deal.
