Metro is in such need of repair that the transit system could shut down an entire rail line for as long as six months to do needed maintenance, Metro board Chairman Jack Evans said Wednesday.

At a minimum, Evans said, Metro will have to shut segments of lines for extended periods because there isn’t enough time to do the necessary work using only nights and weekends.

Metro General Manager Paul J. Wiedefeld confirmed that he was considering such lengthy closures but hasn’t made a decision yet. He said he expected to do so within a month to six weeks.

THis story has been a long time running, I was reading ten years ago about how this agency was being starved for money because the political bosses tended to both not want to go to the work to come up with the money and because a lot of these fools dont believe in mass transit. The agency was stacked with political hacks who were willing to claim that everything was just dandy as the system aged, as they placed band aids over problems till the next fiscal year and till the whole mess would become the next administrations problem. Hell, I was reading 20 years ago in the obscure places that I tend to lurk questions about when the maintenance and upgrades might take place. EVERYBODY almost went about their day ignoring the problem, both government, citizens, and journalists.

Now the system has crashed.

I love it that these assholes are getting a taste of what we in flyover country have been forced to deal with for so long.

Between this and TRUMP 2016 IT'S WAKE UP TIME!

Americans are pissed because the infrastructure isnt in top shape? And Trump is the answer, why?

DID I talk about national infrastructure? No, I talked about government not working, government lying to us. And as I have said a few dozen times at DP all I expect out of Trump is to blow up Washington, anything he does to facilitate fixes is gravy in my books, cause I dont expect to get there till the next guy in the POTUS chair and after a massive upgrade in the quality of Congress.

Not everything in my worldview revolves around Trump, very little does actually, and even if he washes out from here on out he is a national hero.

We already had to shut down the nations capitals rail system for a day for emergency inspections, even third world nations dont let their transits systems get that bad, they manage to keep running.

This is a big story and a big problem. While it is true that Trump will be on this story like white on rice if he is smart this for me is about the failure of this nation to produce, it is about the failure of our government to operate effectively. If you are not embarrassed at the state of the transit system in your nations capital then I have to wonder what it would take to motive you to care about this country.

No, it is just a story that you are trying to fit your anger into and make it another adoration of Trump offering from you.

History will prove me right, of that there is no doubt. There is a 100% chance that the failure of the DC Metro system is a big story, and that it will embarrass the elite, they who tend to profit off of bad government rather than be negatively effected by it as they are here.

Try talking about something other than Hawkeye, I am not that interesting.

Suddenly, the consequences of earlier planning decisions became apparent. WMATA had been formed with little thought about finances. There was no realistic plan to pay for the system long-term—local officials expected Uncle Sam to bankroll construction and fares to fund operation costs. Other cities have a so-called dedicated revenue stream, money automatically appropriated through taxes. New York gets 35 percent of its funding this way, Boston 47 percent, and Chicago and Atlanta 56 percent. WMATA, by contrast, collects a minuscule 2 percent of its budget through dedicated revenue.

The agency’s leadership thus has to convince competing jurisdictions to appropriate cash from their public coffers each year to help fund day-to-day costs. However, according to former Metro officials, it was hard to get the board excited about routine work. “When you open a new rail station, that’s a very sexy thing,” says Harold Bartlett, a 23-year WMATA veteran who was chief of staff from 1997 to 2006. “But when you [want to] buy a new rail-wheel truing machine that makes the wheels not go clickity-clack on the rail cars, that doesn’t get a lot of attention.”
The board generously supported other parts of WMATA. According to a 2010 report by former Metro GM David Gunn, then a consultant, government funds for the buses doubled and for handicap transit tripled from 2000 to 2009. During the same period, rail funding increased by only 12 percent.

It came down to politics, Gunn says: A board rep might not be able to get a new Metro station in his district—too costly—but could certainly swing a bus stop. “They stripped [funding] out of the rail system, and they had it go to the handicap services or to buses,” he says. “And they did that because those are politically positive things.”

At the same time, board reps began to press for longer service hours—another way to score points with constituents. In 2003, Metrorail pushed back its closing hours to 12 am on weeknights and 3 am on Fridays and Saturdays. That was good news for riders, businesses, and the environment. But it accelerated the infrastructure’s deterioration. The new schedule left less time when Metro was closed and maintenance crews could access the tracks. On weeknights, “you’re talking about three hours of actual work time,” says Aaron Wiggins, a maintenance manager who retired in August after 27 years. “Ain’t a lot you’re going to get done in three hours on a nightly basis. It’s impossible

Virginia in particular has work hard to deprive DC Metro of funds for Rail.

they've always know why, they intentionally created these problems.

Child's play next to what Boston's T went through 14 months ago.

Boston too has a long history of not doing Transit right, but it is also not the national capital. Bad rail transit systems are pretty much universal in America, who can we say is great? NYC for one is also massively underfunded, though the management has been somewhat decent last two decades from what I have seen, but they are not that far from total system failure either.

You can't embarrass elected officials. With the morals of our leaders embarrassment is practically impossible. There is practically nothing too low for them to stoop to. Just look at the Lewinsky scandal. His party is proud of his behavior. That is just a reflection of the low moral standards of the people who support such actions. That is just the tip of the iceberg. There have been scandals in both parties every year. On the local level every day. Just look at George H W Bush and all his talk about integrity as is seen everywhere arm and arm with Clinton. Birds of a feather no doubt.

I got breaking news for you. If Trump loses on Tuesday in Wisconsin, the very elites you talk about are going to put forth a campaign like you have never before seen to take the nomination away from Trump.

they will have the last laugh even if it means to lose with Cruz.

They were having a fit when the system closed down for just one day, and now the bosses are talking about maybe 6 months??!! DC Elite get around, they know this does not happen anywhere else in the world, that this is a colossal failure of government, one that would cause the Fed Gov huge problems as the employees cant get to work.

That would be fine with me, Trump has already proved the points I wanted him to made.

What do you think the elite around the world are going to say about us when they find out that america can't even manage to keep the trains running in our capital?

And the GOP elite will make an even larger point to Trump should they screw him out of the nomination. We will then see if he can trump that point with a larger one of his own.

I am pretty sure that there are at least a half dozen threads more suitable for your convention theories.

So to summarize this post, you think Trump will make the trains run on time.

How apropos.

If only he used this as a campaign slogan!

The OP is about the DC metro, aka infrastructure.

No, I talked about government not working, government lying to us. :lamo The delusion of Trump supporters is scary, funny and pathetic, all at the same time.

Not everything in my worldview revolves around Trump, very little does actually, and even if he washes out from here on out he is a national hero.
Except it seems it does.

A "national hero"? For doing what?!

I agree that the US electorate is pissed off at the establishment political parties, hence the popularity of both Bernie and Trump and Cruz over their opponents, whicwho seemingly can't get any traction with the electorate.

Yes, these are implosions in both of the establishment parties, similar, yet different.

Frankly, I think it's high time that there be some serious turn over from the present crop of millionaire career political elites. It seems that all they've done is enrich themselves in their careers of 'public service'.

A "national hero"? For doing what?!

At the cost of a year of his life and tens of millions of his dollars Trump has demonstrated the incompetence of the Elite, the nations anger at the incompetence of the elite, and shown that the cost of their failure to do better will be the little people burning to the ground much of what they hold near and dear. THis is not the first warning message that has been sent, but it is by far the best. THese assholes are on their last chances. Also, because of Trump any intelligent reformers who are lurking who ever had a taste for power will be out next go, now that they know the votes can be gotten, know because Trump trailblazed the road to the SCOTUS chair whether he gets all the way there or not.

At this point I am not sure I would mind TRump getting stopped at all. The elite will have another 4 years to indicate that this time they get the message, to demonstrate that they have the ability and the will to look after the interests of the nation and its people, which I doubt they will accomplish, and then next time we will have a much better revolutionary leader ready to take up the little peoples cause.

If anything with all his redacted statements it shows he is pretty incompetent...
