This seems like a reasonable explanation for the rise of Trump.

This seems like a reasonable explanation for the rise of Trump.

That's actually one of the worst explanations I've heard and it has no part in what's really happening. If only it were so simple to blame the rise of Trump on the Kardashian syndrome. On Trump's money. On money being spent on campaigns. Nearly everything Murphy claimed was off. He even showed a picture of Koch to illustrate his point, but Trump's campaign has spent virtually nothing to date. Trump plays the media for free exposure...very well, I might add.

Murphy insults people with his off-base theory, that assumes Hollywood-watchers are the ones supporting Trump. They're not. Trump is rising because people are not happy with the status quo -- they want change just as badly as they wanted it the first time Obama ran. They didn't get it then and they won't get it now. A President simply doesn't have enough power to give it to them.

Murphy's pretty much an idiot on this one.

1:30 to 2:45 where he discusses the failures of the current system is pretty close.

Ummm maybe you didn't watch the whole thing. At the end he blames the cowardice of real politicians to deal with problems as the real reason for the rise of the "opportunistic demagouge". Which is pretty accurate IMO.

Why Trump? Because he is by far the least crazy in the GOP clown car.

Excellent comment by Rex.

Our 2 party system has been intellectually and morally bankrupt for years, and many know that. Trump has taken advantage of that failure.

The Trump movement reminds me of the Know Nothings a century ago.

Not just the GOP clown car. Hillary and Bernie are riding in the rumble seat.

That would be a good response if it addressed the point Murphy made, it did not. Your response addressed some of the cultural aspect behind the rise of Trump. The final and most germane main point Murphy made was the failure of elected representatives to deal with serious issues in a serious way.

I suggest you watch again particularly at the 2:44 mark.

First I'm not voting for Trump, but I find him hilarious in debates, simply because he is NOT the typical politician, there is no PC with him. Secondly, I wonder about the electoral college. I was taught that the whole premise of the college is to protect the country, and that if the american people vote with the popular vote a candidate that threatens this country, then it will vote against popular vote. It has like what, 3 or 4 times in our nation's history?

Just something to think about.

Trump is not the first "all things to all men" candidate for political office who has risen because of the points made in the video.

When people get frustrated with the inequity of party hacks, and the dishonesty of party politics, they turn to radical demagogues in the hope that ANY change will be better than the existing status quo.

He's wrong on the details of reality TV (for instance, reality TV had nothing to do with Jerry Springer's stuff, it started with Survivor) and his characterization of Trump (biased in the extreme). Just another hit piece from the anti-Trumpeteers which will only play with fellow anti-Trumpeteers.

in the land of the blind, there's no one to verify that the one eyed king even has one eye.

I agree the term 'Reality TV' started in the U.S. with Survivor. But shows like Morton Downey Jr, Jery Springer et al have a lot in common with the real housewives shows.

The point of this opinion piece is not anti-Trump, although Rex obviously is. The point is, why does someone like Trump have traction today, when surely this would not have happened 20 or 30 years ago.

Hard to argue against Rex's point.

Trump is best because he is right on ISIS and immigration. That will get him the Republican vote. He will get the Democratic vote because the middle class wants their jobs back from China and Mexico!

I don't know...when he addresses such things and "the impotence of respectable politicians to affect real change. The blistering train of always broken promises that follows every election. The closed shop nature of the political system separating those with plenty of connection from those with none..."

That reads to me like a perfect picture of the American political landscape...but then you never got that far, decided to trash the guy based solely on his opening remarks.

No wonder Trump is winning.

We had the age of radio in politics, the age of TV, the age of social media and now we are in the reality TV age. That's the current and Trump is the candidate who knows that media. Just as FDR with radio and JFK with TV.

no!!! Trump wants to built a wall, bomb ISIS, and get our jobs back!!!! Simple as that!

Why would Democrats vote for such a despiKKKable piece of **** when so many reputable Republicans are coming out against him?
These Republicans are now writing the ads for Clinton with their extremely harsh words for that chump.

Why do you ignore that trump hired illegals over Americans and think he's all in against illegals?

Why should Republicans support trump when he refused to raise his hand at the debate not to run third-party?
Only to flip-flop on that when it became more clear that he would win the nomination ?

Yeah I agree with you. He and Sanders are most sane of all the candidates IMO.

Would you admit admit that Rubio was also on this too? At least before he and Trump started to have their recess fight over the size of hands, and the amount of pancake makeup started.

Being from the Mid-West, and what's he's accomplished in Ohio, a must win state, Kasich strikes a chord around here. Hopefully, he'll still be in the race by the time Michigan's primary comes.

Cowardness is not the problem, lack of competence and a desire to play at palace intrigue rather than do their jobs (which is likely related to their lack of competence) is.

Of the three, Rubio, Cruz and Trump, he's the most likable. But to be honest, that ain't saying much. I think he needs a little more salt and pepper.
