They'd nominate Rubio.

If Republicans nominate Rubio, they would have an excellent chance to beat Clinton by broadening their party’s appeal with moderates, millennials and Latinos. The GOP would also have an excellent chance to keep the Senate, hold onto a wide margin in the House and enjoy more control of federal government than they have in over a decade.

It’s Rubio Or Bust For Republicans Who Want To Win | FiveThirtyEight

But, of course, they are not. So, I'm sure they won't. And, as a result, they will lose big.

Seriously??? The impact of the Presidential election isn't based on who "your guy" is, but on who "their guy" is. If Hillary gets the nod, it will bring out people who wouldn't normally vote just to vote against her. If they're going to vote for POTUS, then they'll also vote for their Congresscritter. People who don't normally vote, don't usually see a great candidate and decide to change their ways vote for them, but they will see someone who triggers the "Oh hell no!!" in them and get out to vote against them. The Dems. biggest problem is that they only have two potential candidates and BOTH of them will trigger the "Oh hell no!!" response. The Reps. really only have one possibility of a "Oh hell no!!" candidate and that's Trump, if Rubio or Cruz get the nod, they just don't trigger that kind of response.

So?

If Hillary gets the nod, it will bring out people who wouldn't normally vote just to vote against her.

I doubt that.

People who are into politics tend to always vote. The non-voter or occasional voter or swing voter really doesn't give a crap about politics and votes just on a whim. They are unlikely to have a very strong opinion of Hillary, probably don't watch the news, or really care about partisan politics. Somehow I just cant see Hillary being in the race enough of a motivator for people to vote just to vote against her.

If anything, Hillary haters, regardless of party, may tend to have a large turnout in the dem primaries to vote against Hillary, so I have a hunch that Sanders may do better than the polls are showing, though I doubt he will win the nomination.

Trump in the race is another story though, and the opportunity to vote for trump will likely bring out lots of Trump voters. Trumps going to get lots of dem votes and swing votes and maybe even some of those occasional voters. That's why I think he will probably win the nomination and also the presidency.

538 is pretty good at analyzing the maths. Add to the some common sense, like how Rubio would put an entire new face on the GOP, one that it could ride into the next decade, and this is a no-brainer. Rubio is their only real hope to not only beat Clinton, but also to redefine the party and set America on a center-right path far into the future.

Clinton will destroy Trump in the general. And, Cruz probably has too many nutty things in his closet too which she can use, once bothering to do so makes sense.

Did they broaden their party's appeal in the 2014 midterms when the handed the Democrats their asses on a platter ?

It's not the GOP who needs to worry about the next election.

The Democrats have one candidate that's a avowed Socialist and the other's currently at the center of a FBI Criminal investigation and neither one of them can run on the " Successes " of the Obama administration

What are they going to do ? Brag about the economy ? ObamaCare ? His Foreign Policy ? Nope, nope and nope

The GOP just has to stand aside and let the Democrat party continue its descent into self destruction.

I don't know about Rubio NOT making it. I think that Cruz is going to get torpedoed over his Canadian birth, and of course Trump isn't worth the time it takes to talk about him. I think Rubio's gonna be the guy and I think he's gonna drag Fiorina along with him into the abyss.

Rubio has proven over the last two months that he is not ready, and might never be ready. The last month particularly, he now looks pathetic on par with Bush.

Trump isn't worth the time it takes to talk about him. .

Is this normally how you talk about people who prove that they are way better than everyone else?

If Republicans were smart, they would study history and realize that they have been running against the wrong candidate, again.

Feel the Bern.

They're smart enough to realize like most of the rest of us that if Bernie is your candidate it doesn't matter who they run against him, they'll win.

I heard that about Obama too.

Rubio is a gawdawful choice. He's crooked. Rubio is a very shady character. Untangling his financial dealings is like trying to untangle a box of coat hangers. Big questions remain. Rubio's money and other people's money are difficult to sort and separate. Rubio has not done much to clear up matters except in instances where the FBI and the IRA were getting too close to his business and/or political associates and/or personal friends several of which have rap sheets and/or are under investigation.

Rubio has damn near dismissed his constituents in south Florida. The last I read he had missed 42% of the votes in the Senate, some of the votes were critical. South Florida has around 70 billion dollars of real estate that is less than 6 feet above water. Ask people in south Florida how things are after a big storm. Depending on where they live they'll tell you that water makes some streets impassible. Water is permanently rising in south Florida and citizens and businesses need all the help they can get in Washington. Rubio has done nothing. When asked by constituents about it at a town hall meeting Rubio said that he really couldn't address the issue as he wasn't a scientist. That was his answer.

Ask south Florida about how much education money the lost largely because of Rubio. Ask them how happy they have been about that. Ask south Florida how much the trust Rubio?

Rubio would be a disastrous president.

Sure...nominate Rubio.

Then watch the Democrat Old Geezer or the Democrat Crook win the White House.

If republicans where smart, they would vote for the candidate that most appeals to them. Note that is individuals, the party itself is neither animate(hence neither smart nor not smart) nor monolithic, which makes your whole point really silly.

I heard that about Obama too.

Obama would be a BAD example. " Vote for Bernie because Obama was supposed to lose too "

Democrats in recent elections have been avoiding him and his policies like their lives depended on it and not because the GOP convinced everyone that he was a failure.

Because their lives have been substantially impacted in a negative way one way or the other.

Sanders message is even more Progressive than Obama's and his initaives would crush what's left of a already weak US economy.

If Repubs were all that smart a large number of them would not be backing a Liberal supporter of the DNC, Trump. Just goes to prove that anyone can say whatever some people want to hear and they will automatically assume that that person is like them, Trump is no Republican, nor is he a Conservative but yet he is leading the GOP race, good grief some people are just plain stupid. PT B said there was born every minute,

Home Run!

If you think Trump is better than anyone else, you have a problem.

If you think Trump is better than anyone else, you have a problem.

The pollsters say that he is way better than everyone else, but yes, we need to wait for the confirmation, if the votes come in as predicted then the debate is over. The people decide.

So you would vote for Hillary over Rubio ?

Nope. My vote means something to me. I don't vote against, I vote for. Obviously no candidate represents everything I believe is best for the country and no candidate ever will. But I do vote for the candidate who is closest to my ideals.

Americans have it all backwards and the ****ed up two party system that we have benefits immensely from it. People vote against now more than ever. Partisans are probably the worst in doing it. America votes to keep the other guy out and in doing so if the person you voted against loses you are still ****ed because you essentially didn't vote for anyone.

When the Republican Party left me I became an Independent and I've never looked back. Depending on the office and the election I have voted for Republican, Democrat, Libertarian, Independent and Green.

Yes, Independents have much bigger balls than partisans. It's true.

So, no, I am not a mindless partisan who thinks in very limited terms and ultimately votes against the opposing party.

There is no Republican candidate who is worthy of my vote. Actually I don't believe there is a Republican Party anymore. I suspected it when the party left me. Now, I'm damn near convinced of it. It's gone. Yes, there are people who are registered Republicans who would certainly disagree with me, data says people have been and are continuing to leave the GOP. That's fact. This election will pretty much put a nail in that coffin.

The Democratic Party is headed in the same direction as the GOP. Ten years ago I would have said that it would die faster than the GOP. The Religious Right and then the Tea Party (which are now redundant) latched onto the GOP with a death grip and sucked the life out of the party and hastened its demise. Donald Trump is going to be the coup de grace for the GOP. If Hillary is elected I'm guessing that it she will be the coup de grace for the Democratic Party.

I don't much care about either party dying. I won't miss them.

I will not vote for a GOP candidate. I will not vote for Hillary.

Yeah lets take advice from a leftist on who to nominate for the republican party..

If you base your presidential election expectations from what you saw in midterms, you're not going to be happy man in November. I guarantee you that. Remember how 2012 played out?

I don't think there really is a "smart move" for us republicans. The smartest move would be Rubio.. like you are saying.

But as a republican.. I don;t know.. maybe the best thing in the long run would be a Trump? Maybe a third drubbing by the democrats will finally change the make up of the party and get us back to common sense?

Rubio probably does have the best chance of the ones running.

If its Hillary or Sanders.. we can only hope that the democrats pick Hillary. Hillary is our preferred candidate. Yes I know that everyone looks at the polls and sees how well Clinton does against republicans. The problem is.. they don;t seem to look at her unfavorable ratings.

With many republicans and with Sanders.. there is a number of undecideds.. Hillary doesn't have many... you either like her or you hate her. And that means that she does not have much room to go up. She will be good early in the polls but later in the election.. she has little room to catch the people that are not democrat only voters.
