will trumps decision to skip the debate help or hurt him ? when will the first post-debate skip poll be out ? thanks

Great topic. I think I'll start a thread on it.

Trump indicated that he'd do something like this last week when he made his "I could shoot someone" comment. He committed the media version of that action yesterday.

My personal opinion is that this is entirely tactical on his part. He simply doesn't want to have to answer questions with the Iowa primary on the horizon and the increased likelihood that voters will actually be listening to him. By doing this tap dance he has the media talking about everything EXCEPT his non-existent policies AND he gets to play the underdog card he's been relying on all the time. This move allows him to continue to portray himself as both a political and a media outsider and that's what his supporters have been eating up all along.

Now, as you asked, will it help him? My guess is that it will not. This is a play directly for his base and it will piss off those who were beginning to accept him just because he was running out front and seemed inevitable. My bet is that as long as Cruz puts in a good performance we will see him pick up significantly. I also suspect that Bush will pick up several points after he gently reminds everyone that he called Trump a jerk about a month ago.

It's always so funny when something like this happens to an outsider and every one thinks how could they be so dumb to not see this will hurt them badly. Like in 1992 when Perot temporarily withdrew from the race to avoid media scrutiny when he was leading in the polls. I guess running a stable campaign is harder than it looks.

I don't think it will hurt him. The people who support him are with him to the end, no matter what. Whether or not he gains any support or stays level, I don't know. Neither would surprise me. My guess is his support will go up slightly because some people will applaud him for standing up to Fox News.

It also works out well for Fox and Megyn Kelly, though. Even if the ratings for this particular debate are a bit lower, you still have all the other news outlets talking about Fox News right now. Free publicity for them. Fox News, as much as I hate them, is proving itself to be increasingly relevant in the world of politics.

And Megyn Kelly? While she was known among Fox viewers, her name recognition has skyrocketed thanks to all of this. In the end it will all turn into more dollars in her pocket.

Frankly, the whole ordeal probably benefits all involved.

It's the ultimate troll move. It most certainly puts Donald front and center in the news all week and makes the debate itself a sideshow. Will it help him win anything? Probably not.

For what it's worth, I was listening to the radio on the way home from work and there was a Trump campaign volunteer they were interviewing.

(Allegedly) Last week he caught wind that there were going to be "plants" in the audience that would "unethically attack him." Don't know if this is the truth or not, but they're saying it was something more than just Megyn Kelly setting him off.

True or not, I would hate to think that he's the type that would run away from this kind of opposition. His supporters are basically voting "anyone but a politician," so I doubt it'll hurt him too much.

I think it will backfire on him.

Nah....

This is exactly the kind of rebel stance his followers will eat up. "**** you mainstream media..."

Whatever he does that day will get more media attention than any one of the candidates in the debate. I see this as one of the most clever moves he's made.

Fact is, the others would look cheap and dirty if they attack while he's not there, all they can do is whine about him not following "the rules"....which is exactly what his followers want....to say damn the rules, we're doing it our way!

Time will tell. Actual votes will be coming starting next week. We will see if sucking up all the media oxygen actually translates to winning primaries.
