Liberals can be dismayed by conservatives. They get angry at and disgusted with conservatives. But it would be stretching things to say that liberals often get emotionally worked up to the point of almost hating conservatives. Conservatives, on the other hand, do often get worked up to the point of almost hating liberals. You see it in the blogs, you hear it on the radio. It is commonplace. Why so? Two reasons, at least, plus one reason why almost hating liberals is more popular now than it once was:

1. Liberals receive the deserved credit for most of the humane governmental policies that exist, from child labor and civil rights laws to Social Security and Medicare. Because conservatives did not sponsor the legislation brought about by such policies but, in fact, furnished the opposition, they look churlish next to the public’s liberal benefactors. This can piss a conservative off. It wears on a conservative standing on principle to have to be against things that are undeniably good, things like health care and food for poor people. After a while it may get you to feeling like kicking a liberal do-gooder where it hurts. You might almost hate the sanctimonious sonofabitch.

2. Conservatives sense, accurately, that liberals think that on the whole they are smarter than conservatives, spectacular exceptions like the late William F. Buckley, Jr. notwithstanding, and conservatives fear this might actually be the case. They have reason to worry. Studies show that people with postgraduate degrees are far more likely to be liberal than conservative. Also, the percentage of voters, both Democrat and Republican, who identify themselves as conservative is much higher than the percentage that self identifies as liberal, showing liberals to be a more exclusive group. People with creative minds, e.g., writers and other artists, tend to be liberal rather than conservative. If you doubt studies, look at a map of red states/blue states and draw your own conclusion of where the bigger brain pools reside; or check a map of states based on obesity rates, always a reliable indicator of group stupidity - of the fourteen states having the highest obesity rates, one is blue and thirteen are red. The point is that whether true or not the perception exists that liberals are brainier and the perception does not endear liberals to conservative sensibilities. If you’re a conservative you might almost want to hate the snooty bastards.

Liberals of course used to be found in both political parties. Half a century ago, civil rights laws and Medicare were enacted in Congress with the help of liberal Republicans. But the drain of liberals from the Republican Party is now complete. Conservatives who don’t know better like to claim Lincoln as one of their own because Lincoln was a Republican. But he was a Republican at the party’s beginning, after the Whigs collapsed and former Whigs and others had formed the new party to oppose the conservative, slave friendly Democrats. In 1864, when George McClellan tried to unseat Lincoln with promises to end the war and return slavery to the South, the Democrat was the conservative, the Republican the clear progressive. In the 20th Century it turned around as we know; Democrats increasingly became the more liberal of the two parties until finally, for liberal Republicans, extinction. The Tea Party now dooms any chance for a Republican liberal. The upshot is: it is easier than ever before to almost hate liberals for if all are not in the enemy Democrat camp, all are outsiders.

Horse ****.

I've heard liberals get just as shrill and hateful and threatening, if not more so, than conservatives... both here and other venues.

Neither side has a monopoly on hate, or stupidity.

We live in a time where a lot of people have as a guiding principle that if people think or say things that they dont approve of then those people can not be in their lives at best, at worst they need to be destroyed. Despite all the yakking from liberals on how we is the most tolerant and bestest humans that have ever walked the Earth we are now a very prejudiced and intolerant people.

That there is the problem.

Now me I will talk to anyone, and I will walk with anyone who is going my may for as long as they are going my way, I dont care about all the stuff sloshing around their heads except as it is useful for a conversation starter.

This makes me a freak.

I dont care.

one of the fruits of a gerrymandered duopoly is a nation perpetually trying to tear itself in half. and ****, we're all guilty.

A big problem, And why when we learned this lesson something like 150 years ago that gerrymandering is a very bad idea why then do we still do it?

I blame the education system, history is a mystery to most Americans, critical thinking even more so, but your mileage may vary.

i mostly blame instinctive as well as cultural tribalism. and once again, yeah, we're all guilty to some degree.

This post is filled with typical liberal cliches, falsehoods and stereotypes, yet I don't hate you for it. I think you are hilarious. There are few things funnier than an arrogant liberal know-it-all that really knows nothing.

Think bigger. You are part of a civilization that is circling the drain. Things are going to get ugly, but a new one will be born, eventually. It is civilization, civility, that keeps tribalism in check, when it is functional. Ours no longer is, and this is terminal. 20 years ago we might have saved it but not now.

When a country stops making things, the main way to earn a high-income living is to reach into someone's pocket. That raises the stakes. IMO, if we were still a manufacturing country, more people would be focused on making things and selling them than hiring lobbyists who manipulate the system to their benefit. Just my 2 cents.

You've made his point perfectly.

Great point!

I was going to say it was good for a chuckle but your retort was pretty thorough so I will go with what you said.

I would belatedly add:

As we slip from the wage-base of a manufacturing economy to a service based economy, as income disparity increases, and as much of the middle-class wages slip and stagnate, the bulk of us are fighting over a smaller piece of the pie.

And when the dogs are fighting over the scraps of bone, they turn on each other!

Really?

Have you read the threads about the guys in Oregon? Have you paid any attention to how many liberals have suggested that the cops need to go in there and just shoot these protesters simply because they have guns?

With all due respect, only Conservatives can have a monopoly. Liberals don't believe in Capitalism so on their end stupidity is a "community endeavor".

You've made his point perfectly.

Right, we're hateful for objecting to all that stupid partisan clap trap. Totally understand why you lapped it up word for word, though.

Me thinks that those that paint with Board Paint Brushes get a lot of paint on themselves and make a big mess of their job. Now back to playing Analyst.

That was a lot of time wasted. I started to read then I realized your wall of text post is pretty much gibberish.

To hell with it, then--let's get right to the tearing. Most leftist SOB's don't have much heart for fighting, and some of us are determined to destroy them. I could not care less about compromising and reasoning with the limpwristed commie bastards who are steadily ruining this country. **** them all.

Them is us.

Americans.

My dad is a conservative. My mom a liberal. They love each other.

Outside of a few idealogues I don't know of anyone who cares that much about politics or social issues to hate anyone.

We're Jewish...never met anyone who hates Jews. They might dislike Israel, etc but never felt hatred. My dad is a racist but doesn't hate Blacks. My mother was in a concentration camp but doesn't hate all former Nazis.

I hate Dallas Cowboy fans...but in a fun way. I would offer one a beer at a picnic.
