the house freedom caucus is a group of 40 conservative republicans who at the moment wield a enormous amount of power in the republican caucus.

with John Boehner intending to step down at the end of october, the republicans in the house has to elect a new speaker. there are currently 247 republicans in the house, and in order to become speaker the republicans have to vote in their preferred choice by a vote of 218. 218 is the number of votes needed to become speaker of the house, and in normal circumstances the republicans in the house could have elected a speaker easily with their 247 vote majority.

that is where the freedom caucus enters into the equation.

this group of 40 republicans have recently passed out a questionare to potential candidates for the house speakership.

this group of congressmen wield a large amount of power in the republican caucus right now, because without the votes of these 40 congressman none of the potential republican candidates can win the 218 votes required to become speaker.

Good for them. The downfall of Cantor. The November elections, the resignation of Boehnor, wasn't about more of the same, it was about getting rid of the DC establishment.

I love it. "Freedom" caucus. "Values Voters". "Tea-Partisans." All that crap is going the same way as the "Patriot", "Real American" and "Religious Right". In fact it's the same people. OK, "Freedom Caucus" for the context of the OP. Those of us who are not right-wing extremists, and that includes a significant number of Republicans, realize that it is basically the same group of people in the GOP who do not represent the majority of the U.S. Yes, they will try to hold Congress, the Government and even the citizens of America hostage in order to impose their minority will on the majority of the nation. That is part of what has destroyed the GOP.

The Freedom Caucus's efforts will inevitably blowback on them.

maybe the reason Macarthy withdrew from the speakership race is because he knew trying to operate a congress with these 40 firebrands was like trying to get blood from a stone.

That and the fact that it seems he was about to get caught in a squeeze play on the cheating side of town with a "Values" Congresswoman. It appears that the Freedom Caucus/Values/Religious Right/Teapartisans were in the process of turning on him and his undercover "Values" lover if he continued to pursue the speakership.

i am more worried about the fact that no one in the republican house has any stones to stand up to these 40 firebrands and their list of demands.

Indeed. Half the GOP House is looking so weenied and timid they look like Democrats.
