Trump's religious talk causes unease among social conservatives | MSNBC

An interesting article...but it raises a key question: With Donald Trump currently leading the polls by large numbers, people are starting to take him seriously. Assuming that he is a serious contender for the nomination, does his apparent lack of religiousity spell doomsday for his bid? The religious right still has a lot of influence in the GOP, is it possible for Trump to get the nomination with his apparent non-connection to religion and God?

It's probably going to depend more on his positions on the relevant issues, moreso than his personal religiosity or lack thereof.

Once they recongise his status, it'll be fine.

He may be leading in polls just the now, but honestly I don't see him as a serious candidate. I expect he'll fade back into the second tier before long, or drop out.

I'm not no sure. These are the same people who attacked Obama for not being "Christian-enough". With their right-wing social agenda so heavily involved with pushing "Christian" religious issues, do you honestly believe that they are going to be ok with a candidate that doesn't make God a huge part of his platform?

We I take, when we go, and church and when I drink my little wine – which is about the only wine I drink – and have my little cracker, I guess that’s a form of asking for forgiveness, and I do that as often as possible because I feel cleansed, OK? But, you know, to me that’s important, I do that, but in terms of officially, I could say, ‘Absolutely!’ and everybody, I don’t think in terms of that. I think in terms of, let’s go on and let’s make it right.”

The comments, obviously, were largely overlooked because they were soon followed by his controversial criticisms of Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.), but Byron York reported yesterday that it was Trump’s religious rhetoric that arguably mattered more to this specific audience.
A senior Iowa Republican who was in the room, sitting with a group of grassroots activists as Trump spoke, was dumbfounded by the candidate’s views of religion. “While there were audible groans in the crowd when Trump questioned whether McCain was a war hero,” the senior Republican said via email, “it was Trump’s inability to articulate any coherent relationship with God or demonstrate the role faith plays in his life that really sucked the oxygen out of the room.”

Trump won't be the candidate.

The GOP's not that stupid.

You obviously didn't read the article, but that wasn't even the focus of it. It has nothing to do with questioning Trump's faith.

I wish religious beliefs didn't matter but sadly a sizable portion of Conservatives do care about the religious views of their future president.

Do you promise to ask the same question regarding ALL the candidates after the FoxNews debate?

I'm not sure I'll NEED to ask that question, but yes. When is the debate? Since I hardly ever watch anything from Fox, perhaps you'll post the text or a video, eh?

In any event, what do YOU think about MSNBC talking about this religion thing...when so many Americans are concerned about other more important issues?

Was Perry leading about this time 4 years ago? We hit the debates and he went away. I expect the same with Trump.

It's just so refreshing to see a politician not being a dick.

Wow, that's really interesting. Sounds to me like the lefties are getting desperate to find any little thing that'll help derail Trumpmentum.

I haven't personally heard even one word of concern from an actual rightie Christian conservative. Not one. Just... y'know.... Rachel Maddow.

uhhhhhhh......Sarah Palin.......

sarah palin was vp candidate not pres candidate, and she was chosen as a failed effort to boost the popularity of an overly yet unpassionate moderate who did not gain much affection.

I think there are a lot of important issues and there are a lot of things to talk about. I don't have a problem with any network talking about any particular issue as long as they focus on other things as well. I DO think it is a relevant question for a large number in the GOP.

I think MSNBC is...

1. Wasting their viewer's time.
2. Toeing the leftist line on smearing Republicans.
3. Not at all concerned with the issues that American citizens care about.
4. Our American Left Lapdog.

That bleeds over from the NBC side of the house as well.

I may agree with you in general here.....but with respect to this specific issue, I think they have a legitimate point. Lets even take Trump out of it. Can any candidate win the GOP nomination without the backing of the evangelicals and religious vote? I'm not sure that they can. I guess its an issue of how much clout the religious right has in the GOP today. I believe they still have a large amount of clout.

I'm not so sure a non-religious candidate will be rejected out of hand because of that one characteristic. I mean, if...say...Trump says the kind of things the conservatives resonate with, will they dump him solely because he doesn't care much about religion? I don't know...

I guess that's the question that was raised. Personally I think it is an interesting question and my guess is, the answer is yes....because I believe that with that core group of voters, it is almost as important and maybe more important that the candidate espouse a strong belief in God and show real commitment to religion. I could be wrong though....
