Former Sen. Rick Santorum (R-PA) issued a passionate call for Bibles in public schools on Saturday during an appearance at a convention of social conservatives in Orlando, Florida.

"The reason Bibles are no longer in the public schools is because we let them take them out,” Santorum said to amens and applause at The Awakening conference, hosted by the right-wing Liberty Counsel...

Santorum: Put The Bible Back In Public Schools

This guy is really scary. Talking about how we need to put bibles back in the schools because of "the left", and that only one person took away bibles form the schools, so therefore they can put them back? He first says that certain rights cant be taken away, and then says we have to teach christianity back in school? He claims "we let them take them out"? Are you advocating a unconstitutional act? Santorum is insane. "When fascism comes to America, it will be wrapped in the flag and carrying a cross."

I plan to vote for him in the 2016 GOP Primary. He is my number one candidate.

Ehh. Ol Frothy is harmless at this point. No where near the presidency (or any other office).

Even Richard Dawkins supports teaching the bible in school

Talibornagain trash. The guy is just a mullah without a beard.

Even Richard Dawkins supports teaching the bible in school

1.)Good for Richard Dawkins
2.)He advocated teaching it not as theology that is held as absolute truth, he advocates teaching comparative religious studies, which is entirely different from what Santorum advocated, and is already taught in many/if not most public schools, and its also entirely constitutional.

I bet Santorum would be up in arms if some other religious text was given the same prominence he wants for his religious text.

I have no issue with that. From a different perspective, kids are taught in middle school here about the origins and development of religions.

Let us all take a moment to thank the Flying Spaghetti Monster

Not a problem with me either. As long as they are taught the same for all religions from a historical standpoint and not a theological.

actually they dont, which is part of the reason Dawkins supports the Bible

In the United States, public schools don’t generally teach comparative religion courses

the vast majority of students in the U.S. continue to learn very little about the phenomenon of religion from traditional educational outlets, and instead adhere to whatever faith they were born into out of enculturation and ignorance.

https://richarddawkins.net/2013/09/why-we-should-teach-religion-to-children/

The main reason is that Dawkins thinks that people who read the Bible will see it as he does but he's discounting that most people are borderline retarded and will believe whatever they read.

Dawkins does put a lot more emphasis on Christianty teaching over other religious because of how much it has shaped our history

The whole King James Bible is littered with literary allusions, almost as many as Shakespeare (to quote that distinguished authority Anon, the trouble with Hamlet is it's so full of clichées). In The God Delusion I have a section called "Religious education as a part of literary culture" in which I list 129 biblical phrases which any cultivated English speaker will instantly recognise and many use without knowing their provenance: the salt of the earth; go the extra mile; I wash my hands of it; filthy lucre; through a glass darkly; wolf in sheep's clothing; hide your light under a bushel; no peace for the wicked; how are the mighty fallen.

A native speaker of English who has never read a word of the King James Bible is verging on the barbarian.

Why I want all our children to read the King James Bible | Richard Dawkins | Comment is free | The Guardian

Obviously not the same goals as Santorum but both have some good points that really shine a light in the darkness for the "ignorant barbarians" that want to ban all traces of religion for the public space.

all 1000 or so religions that have ever existed, or just the 300 or so current sects, or just the 19 "major" religions. Seems like a bit too much for a single class

Regardless of the exact number of school districts who teach comparative religion, the larger point about what actually Dawkins advocates is true

Uhhh again for not even close to the same reason as Santorum: "Whatever else the Bible might be – and it really is a great work of literature – it is not a moral book and young people need to learn that important fact because they are very frequently told the opposite."

They arent even comparable. One advocates using religion as a state religion and forcing children to be taught it as a state sponsored theological doctrine, and overturning a unconstitutional practice because they are more than one person...

Something school boards may have to decide.
From my expeierence we were taught in highschool from a historical perspective: Christianity, Islam, Judaism, Buddhists, Hinduism. I cant recall any other religions we studied.

I'm glad to hear that. one more vote for a candidate who has no chance of winning against any democrat in the general election. go for it!

Christians like Santorum are fighting the wrong battle. You don't fight to get religion into public school; you fight to get the government out of education. One of these days they will figure that out.

So no gov in education? No superintendents? No state education departments? No school boards?

Santorum is not advocating that, thats just what you think he wants he said nothing of the sort in this speech. Like I said people will believe anything they read, literally anything.

Education should be run by the private sector. That way people like Santorum who want their children to get a Biblically oriented education can send them to such a school. People who don't can send them elsewhere.

Why Judaism? its such a tiny religion compared to the other 4, there are other religions with many more followers

Can we still keep the public sector as an option for education for those citizens who want to "send them elsewhere"?

WHich is why I would vote for him. I am an insurgent voter.

Yeaaaaaa.... Rrrriiiggghhhttt.... “It can’t. Because they want to be the purveyor of rights, and if God is the purveyor of rights, then they lose. We have an obligation to educate, to form, within our churches to preach, within our families to educate, and to fight within our schools. Why are Bibles no longer in public schools? Don’t give me the Supreme Court. The reason Bibles are no longer in the public schools is because we let them take them out of the public schools.”

Beats me. Maybe because its the bedrock of all the other two abrahamic religions.
