Check this out.....BO peep has started an Initiative. Let girls Learn.....what do you think about this? What does he think that by giving us this address. We are suppose to want to help with this issue with girls overseas? Knowing we have to deal with education for our own people. Does he have his priorities in place? Why would he tout he has the most powerful Military with this issue? What say ye?

Transcription of his speech at the link and his Weekly Address up on video.

In his weekly address, President Barack Obama aimed to promote a new global initiative for education for young girls, entitled Let Girls Learn. The president and First Lady Michelle Obama launched the program this week in an effort to "help more girls around the world go to school and stay in school." Obama notes that "62 million girls who should be in school, are not," and that fact is "not an accident. It's the direct result of barriers, large and small, that stand in the way of girls who want to learn."

"In too many parts of the world," the president said, "girls are still valued more for their bodies than for their minds. That's just plain wrong. And we all have to do more to stop it."

I come to this issue as the leader of the world’s largest economy, and Commander-in-Chief of the world’s most powerful military, and I’m convinced that a world in which girls are educated is a safer, more stable, more prosperous place. When girls are educated, their future children are healthier and better nourished. Their future wages increase, which in turn strengthens their families’ security. National growth gets a boost, too. And places where women and girls are treated as full and equal citizens tend to be more stable and more democratic.

62 million out of how many Billions of people?

This is a feel good story/initiative which like most other good stories/initiatives will end up falling rather flat of the goals they wanted to achieve. Maybe not on Obama's part, but it's a huge order to try and get education to girls in places that so vehemently education and female rights like Saudi Arabia and Pakistan. But I do like this story a lot, and Obama is right on the matter that the more educated people are, the better the world becomes.

Whereby the "the better the world becomes" is qualified. It is not necessarily true, if the political structure in which the educated people live prevents the education to get its grip on the road, so to speak.

Mornin' Jog. :2wave: Looks like MO is going to start off the Initiative in Japan and Cambodia. We can see how the Japanese needs a little urging by BO peep to educate their girls and women, huh?

Do you think they should focus on US girls and women with Education here first? If one hasn't fixed the problem at home.....how can sell the idea anywhere else?

Most likely the people in charge of a government that wants to promote ignorance and prevent education are often ignorant themselves.

I would say that the US has some way to go for perfection. At least in this area. ;)

There is an alternative explanation. Those people might have an agenda of their own and voters they think they can impress with the story.

I say bringing attention and awareness in regards to education is always a positive thing. Many girls around the world don't get much opportunity and this brings attention to that.

If others notice the problems we have with our education for young girls and women. Do you think they will be so enthusiastic over hearing this, especially when many young girls are even working in other countries?

Mornin AW. :2wave: Do you think the leaders of those countries should be looking into their own problem? Don't you think we should have to show a system that works before trying to sell it to others. So people don't have to give BO peep a Tax write off by sending money to his initiative.

Do you think they need to travel around and waste money to do this nowadays?

Whatever focuses MO's attention away from school lunches, right?

MMC, we have sick people here, and GW paid(pays) great attention to the overseas AIDS crisis. Should he not have done that?
I am thinking that improvement in third world countries comes through education. While it may not have an immediate effect, eventually some of the violence and bigotry and misconception toward the west may ease, as ignorance is replaced with knowledge. Change anywhere comes from within, so why not give these people the tools to help themselves...ladies first.
I.e.
NOVA | A Walk to Beautiful
If we educated these girls, so that they have the proper tools and information necessary, we'd prevent a lot of suffering.
Yeah, BO is onto something here.

I am not against others being Educated.....yet when it comes to the reality of certain countries governments even accepting the wests methods and putting the time and effort into a program. Doesn't even rate on their top ten list of things they need to do. Especially if one is being preached to.....then having one talk about they have the Most powerful Military in the World.

BO was talking race relations here, remember. Talking about how blacks lag behind with Education and in most industries with work and high tech jobs. Do you think he should start where he knew a problem exists?

Good morning MMC, hope you are well.

Yes, the leaders should be looking into their own problems but maybe it doesn't hurt to get a little push from outside. I would actually like to see Mrs. Obama and her girls get more involved since they are in the position to be role models for young girls all around the world. I can't think of one thing bad about promoting education.

We can do both. We don't necessarily have to send educators there, all we have to do is to encourage those who are local and able to pass on their knowledge, and, like a domino effect, give a gift that keeps on giving.
A nation as great as ours can focus both here and elsewhere, don't you think?
But again, I would always stipulate that reform has to come from within a foreign country. We can't encourage and put girls in harms way when the local prehistorically challenged men threaten their lives for wanting to go to school. That is a problem we have to address separately. However, I insist that knowledge is power, and with such comes change.

What about our girls at home? This he can do something about Immediately. Why doesn't he and why does he looks outside the US first?

Btw AW.....All is well.

He talked about creating NGO's so that would be offices in other countries. Wherein you bring up a good point about some in the ME and how they treat women. Stirring up an issue here while doing business with them might not be in our best interests.

That's not to say there isn't other countries that are going thru the same thing.

Perhaps this is an issue that government should stay out of and let others promote Education. Where and when it acceptable.

I agree. Sometimes it's hard to think there are still some places here in the United States where girls are not getting proper education. I think with a global focus though, that would include us as well as everyone else.

Yeah, but here he can designate money, force legislation. He has mechanisms. Moreover when he does speak in some third world countries. How many are really getting the message in the first place?

Also.....you do understand that BO peep is trying to do the same thing that Bilbo Clinton did with his Global Initiative. Why not go with whats been established for years?

Now we will definitely have to keep tabs on another.....when it comes to receiving Foreign Donations. Especially being BO peep.

Um, shouldn't he be doing this with Black teens/men instead? This sounds like the work of Valerie Jarrett and Michelle Obama. The two ladies who hold the President's hand moreso than any experienced person in his administration. There are multiple organizations already that deal with this, but no highly public ones that deal with black teenage boys exclusively. I guess he doesn't care about his "son" anymore. Only when it fits a narrative

He's going to be doing this stuff a lot more in the next few years especially when he leaves office but on second thought hm...The Obama Foundation doesn't sound as good.

Mornin MGOP. :2wave: Yeah I figured.....it will be the only way he can stay relevant. Since none will be running to him for advice on much. This way he can have the press still talking to him.

How can we focus on fixing it here when we routinely elect groups that are dead-set on killing education here?

Maybe we need a super high tax on "Cadillac" educational spending. Those, like Obama, that send their children to pricey and exclusive private schools, can then be forced to pay thousands in extra taxes annually that can be used to upgrade the area public schools. ;)

Tongue in cheekness aside, sounds good to me. Triple dip them rich folks.

With that said, anyone who has a SS detail should have their kids in private schools, it's a matter of simple logistics.
