US too late on Syria: former Pentagon chief.....

The rise of the brutal Islamic State group can partly be blamed on President Barack Obama's failure to arm moderate Syrian rebels far earlier, said former US defense secretary Leon Panetta.

Panetta cautioned that it would take "a long time" to defeat the Islamic State group, also known as ISIS. "And I think the American people need to know it's going to take a long time," he added, describing Iraq's failure to stem the militant tide "a tragic story."

Panetta admitted that he had not been confident that pulling US forces out of Iraq in 2011 was the right thing to do.....snip~

Well there you have it.....now even Panetta comes out and says that BO is partly to blame for the Rise of ISIS. Now that is the truth being told by another of BO's own team.

Consider Gates has come out pointing to BO being the Problem.....Other Generals have come out due to BO not listening to people and trying to get him to focus. As they to, seen this will be a War that will last some time. What say ye?

I can't see that the so-called moderates (which we don't even really know who they are) would have been in any position to keep out ISIS. In fact, they are the ones who brought ISIS INTO the fray in Syria - because they shared the same goal with regards to Assad.

If we had armed them, all we would have ended up doing is arming ISIS. I don't think the problem is that we didn't get involved, I think the problem is that we're getting involved now.

Mornin 88 :2wave: I agree with you.....what Team BO is failing to understand, is that. Their policy.....their concepts, their ideas, and their thoughts on Syria as well as all Other Foreign Policy. Were wrong from the beginning. The media then naturally runs to the GOP and get their take. Which here the Neo Cons took center stage with Johnny Quest McCain from the beginning and always touting Johnny's military experience. Since they were saying the same thing. All thought this is what it should be.

Help out the moderates. Like you said.....there are none here in Syria.

I watched 60 minutes last night and even though they did their best to softball it they had to report that ISIS is here due to Obama and his inept foreign policy. This thing is so bad that even the most liberal of media can't ignore it.

Panetta seems to see no problem with the end result of the US military's mission of training/arming the military forces of Iraq and Afghanistan which has cost the US taxpayers a very hefty sum. Both the military's and Obama's plans involve that very same idea as the "keystone" of their plans. Nation building is not a valid part of a battle plan.

Mornin' Ttwtt :2wave: Well Panetta now sees BO was completely wrong on Iraq. Plus he knows how BO disengaged due to not liking Maliki. One thing is for certain this problem with ISIS is bigger than anyone thought.

Btw I updated the Concerning ISIS thread in the War on Terror Forum. As they are getting more vocal about going after our people.

Well, you can tell the left don't like hearing BO peep was to blame. But then they will just have to live with it and deal with their so called Historic Demo President being a failure with Foreign Policy.

panetta is an incompetent
he must have some good blackmail material to have been repeatedly appointed to major positions of importance
proving - once again - Obama has a terrible eye for talent
when panetta served as clinton's chief of staff, the clinton administration floundered. almost as soon as he was replaced by Erskine Bowles, it flourished
whether it is the white house, department of defense, or CIA, panetta left each organization much worse than when he arrived

let's see, our administration ended its support of assad
which means we would have had to support the rebels to depose him
however, those who would topple assad are also isis fighters
so, do we arm isis to topple assad. that approach worked so well when we armed osama bin laden to fight the soviets sarcasm alert.gif

qatar is funding the isis military operations yet our nation's major military facility is located in qatar

we eliminated the sunni dictator in iraq allowing the shiites to return to governmental power
doing so placed iraq in the shia orbit of iran

we are in this quandary because our government is engaging in foreign policy without any principles; without recognizing that each relationship does not stand on its own

for panetta to criticize anyone's activities in government is beyond laughable

Well according to Hillary.....both her and Panetta tried to get BO to back the MB backed Sunni Rebels. Except both Panetta and her were wrong in the first place. Along With McCain and Corker.

Now when did you say we gave support to Assad?

Im a little confused with many on the rights criticism of this situation. Many say "we shouldnt be arming the Syrian rebels in the first place" or "we shouldnt be involved at all" but then when Leon Panetta comes and says "failure can partially be Obamas fault because he didnt arm the Syrian rebels" we see many on the right who used the criticism of "we shouldnt be involved or arming anyone" as legit criticism and stand behind Leon Panetta....

Very interesting.

CBC Radio this morning was reporting that both tony Blair and Jean Chretien have weighed in on this new war. Blair says it's 'very late' in the game and cannot be won without a "major contingent" on the ground. Chretien pointed out the reasons Canada didn't get involved in the first war, pointed out that the war under two presidents was fought wrongly and the US pulled out early. Chretien, a long time political survivor, says Canada is now a target of ISIS because of Harper's support of Obama, and that this war cannot be won without an major invasion.

When former world leaders, usually quiet and on the sidelines step out, you know you have a serious problem.

So, you're saying Panetta is incompetent and wrong about this, and you are right, the rest of the wold on that page is wrong. Got it.

Can you give us a military perspective then? Can you explain how it is this man rose to be the most important military commander in the US was appointed to head the CIA by Obama when he is, in your estimation, so incompetent? If Obama is putting him oir leaving him in these high positions, isn't that about Obama's competence not Panetta's?

For you to criticize an man appointed BY Obama is what is laughable. If you are correct and he's so incompetent, then Obama is even more so.

Heya F&L. :2wave: That's the truth of it and that doesn't count those mocking him.....nor those that have no confidence in him.

Moreover, it will take repeated attempts to keep the Arab Countries to stick to their words.

Yep, Panetta was just the Chief of Staff to Clinton, Director of the CIA, and currently serving as Secretary of Defense! With a puny resume like that, why should anyone listen to what he says? He was never a community organizer, though, so we must take that into consideration in evaluating his record, and his lack of arrogance, I guess! He just doesn't know everything yet!

I have to disagree with Panetta on one aspect of this argument.

Yes, ISIS's rise is partially Obama's fault, but it isn't because he didn't arm the so-called Syrian "moderates". It was because he refused to stomp on the Islamists in Iraq when Maliki begged him to a year ago and then dragged his ass stomping on them this year.

Not to mention the draw back of being among military leaders most of his life, surrounded by trained military experts giving advice.

Yep proof that Democrat presidents promote incompetence...either than or by some off chance, he and most of the world are right and somehow the perfect president incapable of error somehow ended up with one; obviously the fault of someone else.

How about we blame ISIS for the rise of ISIS?

Oh?

So, it sprang out of what, a terrorist big bang?

Please recall some history, the US invaded Iraq in 1999. Then again in 2003 a war of "regime change" where Obama decided he needed the troops home for his re-crowning....

NONE of that gave cause for Islamic extremists to build up a good sized hate for America? Obama told the American people everything was fine, he had cured the Iraqi people and he killed Osama; Islam was now America's friend since he apologized to them

Perhaps if we were to look at the generous round of mistakes Obama has made, add the lies and bull**** and then mabe we can get away from blaming Bush, Romney, congress and now ISIS itself the US might start to develop an understanding of what reality is.

Was good to hear Panetta speak out, wish he would have done it sooner. BO can't be bothered to listen to his military leaders, sad since he doesn't have a lick of military experience himself.

The brilliant minds of the many override the mind of one.

1990 doesn't count? And somehow Obama was president in 2003?

NONE of that gave cause for Islamic extremists to build up a good sized hate for America?

The continual interference in their societies and countries for the last half century have given them good cause.

Perhaps if we were to look at the generous round of mistakes Obama has made, add the lies and bull**** and then mabe we can get away from blaming Bush, Romney, congress and now ISIS itself the US might start to develop an understanding of what reality is.

And reality is what? Everything wrong in the world is because of Democrats and specifically Obama? Who is somehow simultaneously completely incompetent but a master conspirator who is carefully undermining America? Who is somehow an ineffectual leader who cannot get anyone with a brain to follow him but is somehow responsible for all the chaos in the world. Oh, it's his inaction that's allowing it all. And yet somehow, no one has a better answer than to kill a whole lot of Russians and Arabs and probably start World War 3. Yeah, that's the reality. Obama is the devil and we're all doomed because we don't have a white Republican as the president.

We all know what to "blame" ISIS on. It's that half century (probably a whole lot longer) of screwing with Middle Eastern nations and peoples, both to use them to fight the Cold War for us and in our protections of American business interests in the area. And yet somehow we keep thinking that this next screwing will be different. Sure, let's stop playing the silly blame game and develop an understanding.

Heya ML. :2wave: It gets even better when a Demo wakes up from the Kool-Aid stupor and decides to stick up for their constituients rather than blank check BO.
