Anyone Have A Problem With The Senate/House Being Gone Another 54 Days

I often wonder if the Senate had been left to the state legislatures to elect if that would be different. As it is they are dependent on current polls to do what will get them reelected. We are essentially the democracy that Jefferson warned us about.

We have moved from the legislatures electing the senate and people electing their representatives to the people electing their senator and the legislatures (via gerrymandering creating impregnable congressional districts) electing the representatives.

I will be consistent here, in that I have a problem with BOTH the republican held half of congress getting 54 days off, and the democrat half, and the democrat controlled senate too. I also have a problem with all the seemingly endless, expensive vacations taken by Obama, just as he is criticizing congress for taking vacations! I have taken literally 1 "away" vacation since 2008, because of the economy, and it tees me off to see Obama and his HUGE entourage taking posh vacations on the taxpayer dole, while many are suffering just to pay their bills, and I am teed off by both houses of congress taking 54 days off......

If left to the states to appoint the senators, they would be answerable to the their state legislatures and not necessarily their political party as it is today. Being a Republican or Democrat would mean less than being a Georgian or a New Yorker. The senate was originally designed to represent the states, not the people of that state. The people of the state elected their state representatives to represent them and then their representatives elected the senators to represent their state.

The House of Representatives was the peoples house, that is where the people were to be represented. Not in the senate. What we have today with our current two party system, the people elect to congress we are not electing them to represent us, we are electing them to represent their respective political parties. That is exactly what they do. Once elected, they forget about the people and follow their party line and agenda regardless of what the people want or do not want, wish back home.

I for one think it is time to repeal the 17th amendment. All that has done is make the senate a miniature House and the states have lost whatever representation they had.

what about the voters in the major cities that have no ability to influence the politicians of counties containing less people? if ohios state legislature in its current form had the power to remove senator sherrod brown and appoint someone else, that would rob the people residing in major urban centers of their ability to influence politics of their state.

The courts, at least down where I live make sure all districts for the state legislature, 180 seats and our state senate 56 seats are equally proportioned. So around here the city of Atlanta and surrounding area probably have around 40 or more state representatives. The county where I live has 2. But of course the huge difference is population.

I assume Ohio is about the same, that the cities due to their excess population would have a ton of more representatives and senators in their state legislature than some rural county.

i am talking about senators on the national level.

The senate on the national level was originally there to represent the states.Your State Legislature would select them, which would be comprised I am sure like ours, a lot more state representatives from the cities than the rural areas. So down here the folks in and around Atlanta would have 40 or so votes in the state legislature to determine our senator whereas my county would have only 2. It is all proportional. The cities will always be more represented than rural areas for the main reason they have more people. Hence the people in urban areas has a bunch more power than us little country folks. Between Atlanta, Augusta, Columbus etc down here, they have much more representatives in our state legislature than us rural folks. Thus much more power in selecting a senator to represent Georgia in D.C.

I fail to see how having a state legislature select our senators would weaken the power or the ability for city folks to have less influence than they do now. It is proportional to population.

But a senator serving in D.C. answerable to the state legislature would listen more to the state legislature wishes than to political party leaders in D.C.

Aren't you glad the GOP chirps away at the President while sitting this term out since July 31st?
Playing dirty politics with Health and Death?

Goldwater, Reagan, both Bush's, Lincoln, TR and especially IKE.
I'm sure you see no resemblance to today's GOP compared to the one you used to belong to !

Actually I see no resemblance to either party. The party of Eisenhower or JFK. Both has swung to the far corners of the diamond. The only political party I ever belonged to was the Reform and I still claim it as my party. What I see going on today is our representatives and senators no longer represent the people of their district or state, they represent their political party.

That is what this election boils down to, do I vote for Nunn to represent the Democratic Party in Washington, not Georgia or do I vote for Perdue to represent the Republican Party in Washington, not Georgia. Neither one will consider the wishes, the wants of the people of Georgia. Just their political party. Since neither one will represent me or the people of Georgia, I really do not care who wins. It is all irrelevant.

I don't call being proud of outsourcing jobs overseas to be irrelevant but that's yer call.
Yer hatred of Reid continues to blind you from the GOP that politicizes Health and Death before an election .

Reid's failure to use the power of the senate to amend, change, add and delete relevant bills by tabling them makes him the obstructionist. His nuclear option destroying minority rights and 200 years of tradition, he deserves to be castigated.

I'll lay you a million to one odds the Democrats will be up in arms and all over the Republicans if they gain control of the senate and they utilize the nuclear option for their purposes. I have given up on the whole nine yards. I hang around to see how my predictions come out. I don't care. If the elected officials we send to Washington are only interested in representing their political party and not the people who sent them, why even bother to vote. It is a waste of time.

Or as my son who never has voted in his 45 years says, Washington is going to do what Washington is going to do whether the people like it or not. It just took me longer to realize that than him. Why should I vote for the Republican agenda or vote for the Democratic agenda when what we want is the peoples agenda? A vote for either a Republican or Democrat is a wasted vote.

I would like to see them come to DC once a quarter to vote bills. Ditch commities ditch omnibus bills ditch all the fifedoms used to eliminate representative democracy.

I want them in offices in their districts waiting to hear from any constituant who has something to say. It is not helpful for them to sit in DC listening to lobbyists. These are not full time jobs and the needless make work serves no purpose.

Campaigning may begin Oct 1. Any money raised may only be spent on one's own campaign. This should ease fundraising demands.

That's complete partisan bull**** and you know it.
Let me know what these serious GOP turds are besides the 50-some repeal but don't replace ACA bills.
That's where you are--still living in the past on ACA.

How did yer Secretary of State lose some 50,000 legit registrations of Black votes?
Do you support the return of 21st century Jim Crow laws to the south ?

After all these years and you still don't know me. Just because I will not spout the Democratic mantra that makes me want to go back to Jim Crow huh? So be it.

Why has the House been on vacation since July 31st?
Only Boehner can call them back.
Why didn't the House move on Dem. Representative Degette's (Colorado) early September request for an Ebola hearing?
why did the GOP wait until three weeks before the election ?

I've yet to see you go against these voter suppression laws--not talking of voter ID.

I do see you slamming Orman for taking soros money--as you must expect him to fight with both hands tied behind his back.

After Orman has been swamped with every GOP dirty trick since Nixon.

Yer right--I don't know you anymore .

Fewer laws they can **** up

I've put out my ideas and gripes in my first thread on the House being AWOL--though I should have said both the House and Senate.
What do the rest of you think--with all that is on their plate--and the optics involved with a new war.
Eight scheduled days of work sandwiched in between 99 days off until Nov. 12th .

As far as I am concerned, the less they work, the better off we are. If they are in DC, they are either spending money, or creating more useless laws, and most likely both of the above. When they are in recess, it's always a good thing.

I bet you like paying those high salaries and benefits for a lifetime to worthless GOPs working 112 days this year also.
While the GOP House puts off an Ebola committee hearing first asked for in early September--then play sleazy politics with Health and Death.

You must be between two worlds with that moronic nonsense.
The name of the capital in the USA is DC--get over yer ridiculous loathing of gov't since yer party is out of the Presidency.

When they are in recess, it's always a good thing.
Exactly--hiding behind President Ebola as the quivering cowards Boehner and McConnell are, along with playing politics with beheadings.

Refusing to give aid and comfort to our troops in Iraq or west Africa.
Ignoring an infrastructure that is falling apart.
I won't waste any more bandwidth on yer simpleton mentality .

The country has no pressing problems to fix.
No new tax law that intelligent people in both parties say we need.
A crumbling infraqstructure that you'll blame on Obola when it starts falling apart.
Fewer laws they can **** up

A GOP too afraid to open its mouth and do its job before an election.
I see what you mean--the GOP politicians in DC today are a bunch of **** ups .
