If this week's revelation that 58 percent of Americans support legalizing marijuana is surprising, it's mainly because legalization remains so taboo within the GOP. Republicans account for only 6 of the 20 cosponsors of theRespect State Marijuana Laws Act of 2013, the live-and-let live pot bill authored by their conservative California colleague, Rep. Dana Rohrabacher (who admittedly marches to his own drummer). Yet drug policy isn't the only area where the GOP orthodoxy is out of step with prevailing views. Here are five other things that most Americans want but Congressional Republicans consider crazy talk:

Legalization of marijuana, same sex marriage, higher taxes on the rich, reducing emissions, immigration reform. All things the majority of Americans agree with and want but the GOP is standing in the way.

Mother Jones? Why not just post from a street corner pamphlet given to you by a street preacher? :lamo

Only spiteful people don't want to reduce emissions, but the response changes when you ask, "which is more important, jobs or cutting greenhouse gasses?" or, "Should we cap our emissions when China isn't?"

The Iranian regime isn't running the story.

All important questions, which have in fact been raised, and addressed by both sides.

Still, the American people generally think we need to deal with climate change. The GOP is simply in denial about it, to such an extent that their main position is to promote conspiracy theories about climatologists being in cahoots with Big Gummit Librals to get grants. That's hardly rational argumentation.

Pfft. Typical trained response from the minions of the Progressive Machine. Recent polls are proving the Machine lost touch with reality long ago.

Priorities

Report back to headquarters and get new orders.

I just did. My orders are to laugh at your bad attempt at imitation, following the rightwing noise machine.

But thanks for proving my point in the above post.

Geeze, you apparently didn't stop talking long enough to get the right new orders. No wonder the Progressive Machine is so out of touch. Still on the AGW meme, when all the polls are showing people are screaming about jobs and the economy.

Do we really want to live like the Chinese?

The short answer is just because people want them, does not mean that they are a high priority or that people are willing to pay for them or suffer as a result of them. If you polled me, I would want the government to provide me a free chocolate ice cream cone mondays and wednesdays, a banana milkshake on tuesdays and thursdays, and a banana split on fridays, but it isn't like I would ever actually do anything to make that happen. If you really want to know what americans want in terms of priorities or even attitudes, you often have to slant drill into issues as opposed to just asking them and rating how strongly your opinion is.

We already raised taxes. Unless you don't keep up. It happened Jan 1st.
Immigration "reform"also gets a whole lot less popular when it is actually explained. Surprised a DemSocialist supports the idea of importing millions more low skilled, education people who will inevitably drive down wages. Of course,as a partisan and not a patriot, those kind of considerations hold little value to you.

The GOP opposed raising taxes on the rich, making the OPs point even more trenchantly. Try to keep up.

The polling cited in the article was done by Gallup.

Oh yes because your definition of patriot is the only one that matters. I forgot if you dont agree with your views on issues then you are not a "patriot". How silly of me.

Got to love Mother Jones who certainly doesn't have any axe to grind, LOL. What a bunch of crap! I will never understand people like you who want this country, the greatest on the face of the earth, to become more like Europe and where social issues trump economic issues.

Do you people really have a clue? Do you have any idea what the debt service is going to be on a 17 trillion dollar debt when interest rates adjust upwards and if not, why not? Do you realize that someone has to pay for your social spending? Do you realize that you cannot legislate equal outcome without hurting a lot of people? Do you not understand that without a strong economy, social problems are going to get worse because of the number of people dependent on the few people who pay FIT?

I am absolutely shocked at the ignorance of so many people here. Yes, go ahead and ignore the liberal economic record because those liberals spending all that money didn't spend it right but this group will. Yes go ahead and support demonization of the private sector that creates the meaningful jobs and funds the programs you deem necessary. Yes, go ahead and show that you really want to spread liberal misery equally to everyone else.

Love how literally you just said didnt address anything in the article or anything substantial.

Murdoch's legion of paid posters, now a matter of public record..

Thread derailers like the Conserv need to be banned from the thread .

It is the same argument over and over again, not one of those items listed addresses the economic results we have today and it is economic results that trump everything else.

Higher taxes on the rich and keeping the gov open arent economic issues? Really!?
Also do you also deny that majority of Americans want this?

So then you believe the govt. needs the money more than the American individual does? Being a socialist serves you well as obviously you are unable to compete in a free market economy.

You think we need a 3.77 trillion dollar federal govt? why?

Thanks for not answering any of my questions.

What other purpose would you support raising taxes on anyone? Why is taxing the rich and taking in 80 billion dollars so important to people like you. I pointed out what the budget Obama proposed was and what you would get out of taxing the rich. Your argument is illogical and simply wrong. Take your socialism out of this country and Obama with you.

I am against the legalization of marijuana especially with the war on cigarettes. What is the difference? , I have no problem with same sex marriage and if I had to vote on the subject, I would vote in favor. I think any rise in taxes should be met with a reduction in spending, that the debt/deficit problem will never be solved without a combination of both. I think our Emissions regulations have tended to go overboard like the health warnings on sugar. Feed a rat a pound of sugar a day and he most surely will suffer from it, moderation and a happy medium is the key. Immigration reform, yes I realize we have to do something and am in favor making it legal for all illegals here now, but no path to citizenship since they broke the law to get here. Either we are a nation of laws or we aren't.

I think it is to what degree each individual Americans agrees with the subjects you stated whether or not you can actually say the GOP is out of step with the rest of America. Somethings they are and something they are not. One thing you could say about Democrats being out of step with America is the ACA, since it was passed those who opposed the law has always been over 50% to around 40% in favor.

Well and fairly said, Pero! Several of the issues TheDemSocialist mentions are not ones that all Americans agree with, let alone just within the Republican party. Wide brushes usually only work best when painting the side of a barn...
