labor is a commodity

a company should pay as little as possible to obtain the desired quantity and quality of that commodity.

when any other factors are taken into account that company is no longer competitive

Truth hurts-I guess when one was part of a teachers union one would be touchy

why do public sector employees even need a union? those they bargain with are often the same people they elect to office

The right wing mantra is that anybody who belongs to a union is a slug and any wage they receive is a rip off. They long for the good old days of slavery - when nobody had to worry about things like a decent wage or working conditions. If they can't have slavery, they'll settle for sweat shops and unorganized workers subject totally to the whims of rich people making their money off the labor of others. It's how you wind up with miners dying in unsafe, un-unionized coal mines.
