Paul in 2012?

Could Ron Paul get the nomination in 2012? I think it's possible. Let's imagine for the sake of argument that Obama is very popular coming up to the 2012 election. It is possible and perhaps likely that the big hitters in the party will sit out, keeping their powder dry for 2016. Historically, incumbent presidents attract weak opposition. I could see most of the big hitters sitting out, leading to a weak, fragmented field in 2012. Ron Paul has proven that he has a very devoted group of supporters. Am I the only one that could see a primary with depressed turnout, where Ron Paul's devoted base carries him through? What do you all think?

Re: Paul in 2012?

Not at all.

Its nothing against Paul's message, he just simply does not have the charisma nor the speaking ability and political savvy to put his ideas across as intelligent and helpful instead of over the top and crack pot to the average mainstream nation wide audience.

I do believe he'll have a far stronger showing in the primaries in 2012 if he runs again though, and I think it'll continue in the correct direction for the republican party to a point. The hope for Paul's ideology is him inspiring and helping to create a charismatic, younger, person with his ideals but the ability to explain them in a way that appeals to the masses and helps them understand it.

Re: Paul in 2012?

I don't think so. Ron Paul was just a messenger. In 1964, Barry Goldwater was also a messenger. He brought us Ronald Reagan. I look forward to who Ron Paul will end up giving us.

Re: Paul in 2012?

You could definitely make a case due to his supporter's feverish enthusiasm. I also think that he could be considered an "also ran" like Kucinic. He is a purist, like Kucinic is for the opposite end of the political spectrum. If I understand you correctly, the situation would be a sacrifical candidate. If that is true, it's very possible.

However, I don't think the GOP plays to lose. I tend to think this far out it's way too early to predict who will get the nod. Oftentimes someone rises up to overtake the early frontrunner. I don't think Jindal or Pawlenty are the guys either. It's really a tossup. I don't think that there are any GOP big hitters.

Nope, I don't think it is possible. Had he run third party in 2008 I think he would have lost, but I think he would have won in 2012.

As it stands right now, the only chance he had was to run third party 2008, but since he didn't he doesn't stand a snowball's chance in hell of getting the Republican nomination for 2012.

Re: Paul in 2012?

I'll actually go so far as to say it's 100% his message. He's like pancakes - they seem great at first but once you really dig in, you're like "wtf why did i ever think pancakes were a good idea."

*awaits 40 posts from Paulites explaining why I'm an idiot for not understanding that "Dr. Paul" is the only one who can truly save us from the federal reserve*

No, nto at all. Ron Paul has "some good" ideas, but he's far too out there to do anything with it. Palin or Jindel will be at the top of the 2012 ticket, or at least are far more likely then RP.

And I LIKE RP good ideas, he's just... not a stable man.

Re: Paul in 2012?

I think they need to kidnap David Cameron and bring him here.

Otherwise the GOP is going to end up nominating another anti-intellectual.

Nope. Not possible. You forget that the Republican field in the 2008 election was weak and fragmented. Yet Ron Paul still managed to win only 15 delegates.

Yes, Ron Paul has a very devoted group of supporters. There just aren't that many of them.

Agreed: too gray, to lanky, and too geeky.
