If I were a member of the Texas legislature, I would do all I could to oppose any attempt by rogue judges to impose a new definition of marriage on the people of my state."

So fantastic, local governments can be invasive into your personal life based on irrational relgious beliefs, but not the federal government.

To a specific point. Whatever not outlined within the constitution should be, in my opinion, left to the states to decide. Slavery is a non issue, because its very existence underscores the constitution. I am not arguing against federalism. When a constitutional amendment becomes enacted, it should trump state and local law.

For example. While i do believe cannabis should be legal, i also believe it should be left up to the states to decide until a constitutional amendment is enacted.

IMHO, it would be a tragic mistake to just legalize cannabis federally,while not taking the states sentiment into consideration.

I think the difference between most of our positions is that I view our government as a confederation with a stronger than normal federal government and I'm assuming that you like the view of government as Federalist or tilted heavier in federal power.
