McCain's Latino conundrum

Very little attention was paid to the issue of immigration during the Republicans' four-day convention in St. Paul, Minnesota, something which might not bode well as the White House race hurtles into its final stretch.

McCain only alluded to the issue once in his address to the convention saying: "We believe everyone has something to contribute and deserves the opportunity to reach their God-given potential from the boy whose descendants arrived on the Mayflower to the Latina daughter of migrant workers. We're all God's children and we're all Americans."

I've been saying it all along. McCain will lose the support or Latinos or conservatives on this issue. With 40% of Latinos voting for Bush in the last election and the GOP having a base of 25% evangelicals nationally can McCain afford to lose either? Which one will he pitch to?

Are you forgetting that McCain went against the majority of his base in supporting that immigration plan Bush was trying to push through?

There's only so much ***-kissing I'm willing to tolerate in order for these guys to win votes and that plan went beyond my line. If we have to lose some Latino voters because we won't suck up to illegal immigrants, so be it.

Which means what exactly? That McCain the nominee won't forget that and continue alienating his base just to be a maverick? It's been established that to win in the GOP you have to be a hardliner on immigration. How will McCain balance both having pushed a pathway to citizenship for illegals and being a hardliner on immigration?
