Current Mood: | Poll: Democratic bounce gone, race tied Boy that did not take long..........Look for McCain to get a nice bounce from his convention........... Poll: Democratic bounce gone, race tied - David Paul Kuhn - Politico.com
A poll released today by CBS News reports that Barack Obama's post-Democratic convention bounce has been erased — and that for the first time, John McCain has drawn even with his Democratic opponent in the network's poll.
Only hours before McCain accepts his party's nomination in what will likely be the most-viewed moment thus far of his presidential bid, the race is knotted at 42 percent apiece, with 12 percent of voters stating that they are undecided, according to CBS. Obama was ahead 48 percent to 40 percent by CBS’ measure following the Democratic convention.

I still think it's gonna be a photo finish for both candidates.

I'm surprised that McCain's campaign has not been able to poll along side the Obama Campaign as it had before the conventions. |

The significance of that is being that Palin gave the speech to a record GOP audience that is but a mere 1mil shy of Obama's speech - which isn't surprising in itself considering it was her first ever national address.
McCain's speech last night was about as exciting to Carter's speech some 30 years ago. In fact the way he was going on about it, one almost got the opinion that it'd been a democratic white house these last 8 years rather than a republican. |

We'll have some soon enough. Hang tight.
McCain's speech couldn't excite you unless he said he doesn't want to drill, and even then you would have claimed he was pandering. |

Current Mood: | Re: Poll: Democratic bounce gone, race tied We won't be able to judge clearly what his convention bump was until Monday or so.
The RCP Average clearly shows some erosion into Obama's lead thus far, and I would suspect that McCain's numbers should improve a little more in the next day or two. Although the last 2 tracking polls do have the Palin Speech reflected in them. The CBS Poll is so outside of the rest of the polling for either candidate, that it probably should be considered an anomaly right now: RealClearPolitics - Election 2008 - General Election: McCain vs. Obama
The problem Republicans have is that their convention was basically a biography for John McCain and attacks against Obama (with the typical Reagan Circle Jerk thrown in) That can certainly result in reducing your opponents poll numbers in the short term, but there was never an affirmative reason given to vote for McCain this November.
The logic was: "The Republicans have done a terrible job the last 8 years, so you need to throw the Republicans out, and elect more Republicans so we can clean it up."
I certainly can't see how thats a wining message, but its the only card they really have to play. The policy proposals that McCain did outline in his speech were the exact same proposals Bush has laid out in his State of the Unions. I would look for the Obama team to start running ads showing Bush talking about say Vouchers, and then McCain saying almost the exact same thing, and so on and so forth.
The McCain team would very much like for this to be a culture war / Palin Soap Opera election the next 60 days rather than an issues election. They know if its an issues election they will lose. The problem for them is that the climate today in America is as such that its almost certainly going to be an issues election. I guess the coming weeks will tell.
