Re: GOP Convention thread

Here's my short 2 cent on her speech:

Her unctuous pap obviously sits well with the die hard followers but by employing a staccato speech, she clearly missed an opportunity to gravitate the universe of persuadable voters. This was the perfect venue for her to grab some votes from possible cross overs and independence but instead, she went off of firing screed of live ammunition of personal attacks. So much for a "reformer" who is parroting the same ultra-partisan tactics that apparently she is planning to "change" in Washington. She had no appeal beyond the base.

After all, She turned out to be yet another Rovian attack dog, barking Bush's speechwriters' "same old quips." Very disappointing. I mean, here's an unprecedented historical moment for the Republican party -- the first VP nominee in the history of the party -- and she pissed on an opportunity to garner good will and set higher standards for all other female future comers. She came out more of a smarmy individual rather than classy; someone who could have stayed above the fray.

Here's the biggest problem with her overall performance: Her message wasn't "focus;" heck, it was all over place. How is she expecting people to remember anything from her drivel the next week? "She attacked?" Is that what she hopes people to remember? Deliver "your" point of view, don't marinate the speech with bunch of personal issues with Obama. It makes you malignant, resentful, and above all, an unlikable candidate, period. The expected narrative was also supposed to humanize and personalize her, instead she stuck to her generic, proverbial Republican language. Tons of read meat thrown at the rabid crowd.

By mounting series of gratuitous attacks, she left herself vulnerable to all sort of counter "smear" retaliation which is the last thing we need in this election. Why would she go belittling the work of community organizer -- that wasn't very smart. You got all these community organizers helped after 9/11 and Katrina... I can see Obama cutting her short lived stardom over this. His campaign has already come out with a response:

Quote:
Community organizing is how ordinary people respond to out-of-touch politicians and their failed policies.

Not to be reminded that Martin Luther King was a community organizer. I am just looking for some consistency here. All in all, her condescending sanctions against community organizers would ultimately be her bane.

If that wasn't enough, she went on hurling insults at "liberals" as if the word itself carries such negative connotation. No one was there to remind her that she is supposed to court for "Hillary" supporters who happened to be "liberal." Can you say she is no Hillary card? Moreover, in a year where Democratic mantra is more appealing to the majority, due to Republicans being in the office for the last 8 years, she managed to spit on any likely cross over "liberal" voter. Again, not very smart.

PALIN: "We suspended the state fuel tax and championed reform to end the abuses of earmark spending by Congress."
Ummm... through hiring a lobbying firm that had ties with you-know-who and gorging on millions of earmarks which McCain has been championing against since mid-90's to "reform!" I believe I've already posted this article, Palin's Small Alaska Town Secured Big Federal Funds:

Quote:
Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin employed a lobbying firm to secure almost $27 million in federal earmarks for a town of 6,700 residents while she was its mayor, according to an analysis by an independent government watchdog group.

There was $500,000 for a youth shelter, $1.9 million for a transportation hub, $900,000 for sewer repairs, and $15 million for a rail project -- all intended to benefit Palin's town, Wasilla, located about 45 miles north of Anchorage.
And... when she left, the town was $20 mil in debt.

Quote:
PALIN: "I told the Congress 'thanks, but no thanks' on that bridge to nowhere."
Argh! I don't even want to go in to that. Read the article at Daily Howler.

I am too exhausted tonight to examine her speech any further. Frankly, this election has become a macabre joke, from all sides. But at the end, I guess she is going to sell Airforce One on Ebay with the help of McCain's favorite ex-CEO, Meg Whitman. Then fire all the White House cooking staff. Now why would anyone do that? You can find the transcript of her speech here.

At this point, I don't know which I can't stand more, Nancy Pelosi or Sarah Palin. What a nightmare are we in. Now for a bit of satire, last night Jon Stewart had a bit too much of fun with blowhards at FoxNews, September 3, 2008: Sarah Palin Gender Card.

He's as uninspiring as a wet paper sack. Half the time they pan the cameras a good number of the crowd is just setting there staring off at someplace other than the podium, looking bored.

He's afraid to raise his voice.

"I know, I know, I know." Really? How do you know? Give us a clue.

That last minute of his speech was the most insprational moment in political speech history since JFK.
