I had read this in an editorial in the New York Times. I found the Time magazine article (the editorial cited to this article). This is just nucking futs. Quote:

"She asked the library how she could go about banning books," he says, because some voters thought they had inappropriate language in them. "The librarian was aghast." That woman, Mary Ellen Baker, couldn't be reached for comment, but news reports from the time show that Palin had threatened to fire Baker for not giving "full support" to the mayor.

As I said in another thread...
The ex mayor, that she beat, who resents her for how she won the election, claims this. Really unbiased source there.
Further at that point, nor at any other point, were books banned.
Plus you leave out the part where another thing the religious contingent in the town wanted apparently, in regards to bars and alcohol, Palin refused to do.
And further on, when the religious right was demanding she put forth legislation to stem abortions because of a supreme court ruling came down against parental notification, she stated no.
Yep, no wonder those evangelicals are going crazy over her. She's obviously in their pocket what with all the books that aren't banned, the bars that aren't closed, and the abortions that are still going on.
