Maverick?

Saw this definition of maverick posted online and got a chuckle out of it.

mav·er·ick
[mav-er-ik, mav-rik]
-noun-
1. Southwestern U.S. an unbranded calf, cow, or steer, esp. an unbranded calf that is SEPARATED FROM ITS MOTHER.
2. a lone dissenter, as an intellectual, an artist, or a politician, who takes an independent stand APART from his or her associates.

The post suggested that Sarah Palin's children would be the real mavericks if she was VP.

I think the point was that Sarah should tend to the family that needs her first and foremost.

Teenage pregnancy and a baby with special needs does require a parent's full attention.

The hysterical thing is Ten said something incredibly similar. My jaw practically dropped to the floor when I read it. The very people you'd most expect to call foul in regards to comments like these are the very ones who are putting them forth.

So much for feminism being about choice. Feminists writing books about how women who stay home with their kids are bad role models. Feminists putting down a young gal who bravely made a choice to have her baby. And now we have feminists putting forth the notion that Palin can't be VP because being a Republican mother means she should chain herself to the kitchen sink and any and all problems her kids have are easily blamed on her apparent neglect because she works!

I don't know if Common Sense is a feminist. But I know 10's supposed to be one. It's really odd.

Feminism is not about women having choices. It's about women making the right choice, the feminist choice. The liberal choice. Anything else and they all but claw your eyes out.

I don't disagree with you that women should be able to make decisions as to career changes without being chastised for “not tending to their family”. Those are choices that individuals make as parents. In the case of Sarah Palin, I can’t imagine her husband continuing to work in the event McCain is elected and she becomes Vice President, thus he would be able to fill in with parenting duties when the demands of her office kept her from doing so. After all, it’s their family and certainly they can make it work. The Kennedys had kids in the Whitehouse and they managed. Bill and Hillary did an excellent job with Chelsea raising her in the Whitehouse as well.

Now, I think that many parents look at her choice to get on the ticket now and question that choice because it has placed her teenage daughter’s unwed pregnancy out on the world stage. In a perfect world it should be regarded as their personal business and the media should largely ignore (I feel bad for not ignoring it myself yesterday). However, the world is far from perfect. It was just a year ago that a 12 year old accident victim was mocked by Rush Limbaugh on his radio show just because the boy testified before congress on SCHIP. His entire family was trashed in the conservative blogsphere and talk radio simply because he talked to congress about a program he benefited from. So knowing the vitriol that is present in American politics today and knowing that even children don’t seem to be immune to it, I do think that a lot of parents would have questioned throwing their family out on to the world stage at such a time.

Finally, Sarah Palin did make the choice to not abort her child with Down Syndrome. However, frankly I think the majority of parents would make such a choice. It’s a rare individual indeed that thinks “Well the kids not perfect, so we just need to abort and forget it ever happened”. It’s insulting for social conservatives and the religious right to act as though liberals would not make the same choice. Moreover, it is to be commended that her daughter Bristol chose not to abort as well. However, that’s an easier choice when your family has the financial means to ensure that choice is not going to land you on the welfare rolls. The thing is, Sarah and her husband chose to not abort when they found out their child has Down Syndrome, and their daughter Bristol chose not to abort when she found out she was pregnant. Sarah Palin if she had her way would dictate that choice to every other family and unwed mother. Even if they were a victim of rape or incest, she would dictate that choice. No matter what their financial or family status, even if a mother found out very early in the pregnancy that her baby would be profoundly retarted, Sarah Palin would dictate that choice to her. No matter what the circumstances, she would like to dictate the choices that both her and her daughter have freely made to everyone else and that’s why feminists and civil libertarians are not going to vote for her.

Please show me where Sarah Palin has instituted or backed policies and legislation in Alaska that would bring you to that conclusion.

She has openly stated before that she did not support the right to choice even in the case of rape and incest. As she has stated herself "she is about as pro-life as someone can get".
