Allow All Veterans Back into the VA: One of Obama's first acts will be reversing the 2003 ban on enrolling modest-income veterans, which has denied care to a million veterans.

How would this plan allow "all Veterans" back into the Va, when he is only talking about "modest income" ones?

I imagine he's going to start with modest income vets and then open it wider, after modest income vets have been worked back into the system. It makes more sense than flooding the VA. What about this plan do you disagree with?

On January 17, 2003, the Bush Administration banned enrollment of "Priority 8" veterans into the VA health care system due to resource constraints. Priority 8's are non service-connected veterans who exceed a certain income cap, currently as low as $28,430 in some regions. VA estimates that as many as 1.5 million middle-income veterans have been denied, or are awaiting, enrollment into the VA health care system due to this restriction. At a Senate Committee on Veterans' Affairs' budget hearing on February 13, 2008, Secretary Peake expressed a willingness to consider modifying the Priority 8 income threshold.

Here's the original news story from the VA

The suspension of enrollment affects only veterans in Priority Group 8, the lowest group in VA's eight-level system for setting health care priorities, who have not enrolled in VA's health care system by January 17. Priority Group 8 veterans already enrolled will be "grandfathered" and allowed to continue in VA's health care system.

Work is underway with the Department of Health and Human Services to determine how to give Priority Group 8 veterans aged 65 or older who cannot enroll in VA's health care system access to the "VA+Choice Medicare" plan. The plan calls for VA to participate as a Medicare+Choice provider. Eligible veterans would be able to use their Medicare benefits to obtain care from VA.

VA has been unable to provide all enrolled veterans with timely access to health care services because of the tremendous growth in the number of veterans seeking VA health care. More than half of all new enrollees have been in Priority Group 8. This demand for VA health care is expected to continue in the future.

Wow thats really messed up since I have three vets in my family. Those who fought and spilled blood for this country deserve the benefits regardless of income level.

Long overdue. I've been denied VA benefits. It's about time someone stepped up to correct such an egregious bigotry towards all vet's, irrespective of their income.

Worst? 2004's election saw some pretty horrible rhetoric being tossed around as "factual news."

are you poor? I think he is giving access to the poor.

if you are not poor then be like me (who has free VA benefits) run run away from the VA..... It usually goes better at the DMV :shock:

Now here's some interesting food for thought. At the bottom of most of his policy pages he has a pdf file with exhaustive details on his policies. It'd be easier to discuss policy with you if you actually read up on it before you attacked it, instead of the abbreviated blurbs on the main page.

It's harder to debate the issue when there's so much false premises and confusion from you not doing your homework. Case in point the beginning of the thread when you didn't know that only certain vets currently didn't have benefits. If you did your homework, you'd know that.

According to Obama it would seem so.

Why would you who have the means want to burden the VA?

You do know that the majority of vets are not eligible for the VA right?

This is not the scope of this thread. Obama stated all vets then named low income vets. This is the issue.

I think the point is that the VA system and care is so poor that people with benefits who can afford it go elsewhere.

Maybe we need to fix the system so that it is not seen as a last resort!
