When they say volunteer, do they mean "call me if you need me and I'll come if I can" or is it volunteer as in "sign here and for the next 5 years you are ours any time and any place we want you and it's jail time if you don't show up"?

I'd be happy to sign up to serve my country if the time comes when I feel it needs the service of patriots and not just fodder for corporatist expansion. I'll sign up if I can choose whether or not to come when they call.

The volunteer spirit in this nation has been hijacked by greed and narcissism.

IMO it would be great to have a corp of volunteers who would respond when called upon to serve their nation and it's peoples. Brings back to me Kennedy's challenge to all American's to "Ask not what your country can do for you. Ask what you can do for your country.". Lovin' it.

I absolutely would volunteer if the necessity arose. I believe it's part of my civic duty but then I also heard Kennedy make this statement and believed in it then as I do now and find Obama's idea similar. Ah...I guess I just get sentimental in my oldish-ness...
