Reading through obama's website I came across his "education" "on the issues" section.

Barack Obama | Change We Can Believe In | Education

Recruit, Prepare, Retain, and Reward America's Teachers
Recruit Teachers: Obama will create new Teacher Service Scholarships that will cover four years of undergraduate or two years of graduate teacher education, including high-quality alternative programs for mid-career recruits in exchange for teaching for at least four years in a high-need field or location.

Prepare Teachers: Obama will require all schools of education to be accredited. He will also create a voluntary national performance assessment so we can be sure that every new educator is trained and ready to walk into the classroom and start teaching effectively. Obama will also create Teacher Residency Programs that will supply 30,000 exceptionally well-prepared recruits to high-need schools.

Retain Teachers: To support our teachers, Obama's plan will expand mentoring programs that pair experienced teachers with new recruits. He will also provide incentives to give teachers paid common planning time so they can collaborate to share best practices.

Reward Teachers: Obama will promote new and innovative ways to increase teacher pay that are developed with teachers, not imposed on them. Districts will be able to design programs that reward accomplished educators who serve as a mentor to new teachers with a salary increase. Districts can reward teachers who work in underserved places like rural areas and inner cities. And if teachers consistently excel in the classroom, that work can be valued and rewarded as well.

My question is how is this different than anything we are doing now and what "new and innovative" ways is he speaking of. To me this whole plan sounds like a lot of lip service.

What say you?

Also what effect does "Obama will require all schools of education to be accredited" have on the education system. what is the purpose of this?

How will he recruit and help inner city schools retain qualified teachers?

What does he mean by "high-quality alternative programs"?

They are not accredited now? Does that mean any crackpot can start a school promoting say Nazism or some sort of religious cut and call it a "school" for kids?

In other words is there no control by local, state or federal governments that schools actually teach stuff and not are sweat shops or something else?

My wife is teaching currently at a nursing school that is not accredited, It is designed to help low income people get thier LPN's. Accreditation would be near impossible for this school to achieve, and therefore shut it down under Obama's plan if I understand it right.

I am not for this.

LPN?

As for accreditation, it should be simple and easy, and should be designed to prevent places like Pakistan's madrasas and other forms of non education institutions, claiming to be education institutions.

Licensed practical nurse. Below an RN.

NJ used to require accdreditation for nursing programs, Meaning that poor students had not only to learn nursing but take and pay for general education classes. Which is not a bad thing, but when you have a family to feed, makes prioritys that prevent you from attending.

This led to a HUGE shortage of nurses in NJ.

They lifted accreditation requirments for LPNs and now the need is being filled and people of "modest income" can afford to go.

See there are boards a nurse has to pass. so how you get the education should not matter. as long as you pass clinical and the boards.

And this is America jack, you can call a bagel store an "educational institute" caveat emptor, or what not.....
