There's one problem with that theory Evo...the Eastern Bloc consistently had much worse environmental policy then the West. |

There's one problem with that theory Evo...the Eastern Bloc consistently had much worse environmental policy then the West. | He's a bit right by about 1%.
It's going to need to take strong government leadership to get the boat pointed in the right direction but it's going to take the full capacity of the market (remainder 99%) to get the screws turning at full steam so as to avoid environmental disasters.
The Eastern bloc was an utter disaster because they weren't the least bit concerned about environmentalism, not that it was because they were a socialist society. |

Industry leads to pollution.
If only we could live in caves and eat roots and grubs, we'd save the planet! Woo!

Current Mood: | Re: Capitalism harms planet - Morales Capitalism led to an increasingly large railroad industry in early U.S. history. The railroads led to an easy means of shipping cattle to slaughterhouses. The availability of beef led to an increased demand for it. Increased demand=more cows. More cows= more cow flatulence= more methane= greenhouse gasses= global warming= harming planet. Therefore, by the transitive property of equality, capitalism= harm planet.

Current Mood: | Re: Capitalism harms planet - Morales Technology may be causing most of our current environmental problems, but the solution is not to abandon it (or capitalism). The solution is to allow the free market to flourish so that we can create new technologies that can solve these problems.
It's highly unlikely that the technology of the future will be as environmentally destructive as the technology of the past. The more rapidly we make technological advances, the more rapidly we can develop green solutions.
And newcoupforyou is absolutely right. Non-capitalist nations (and I would expand this to include ALL less-developed nations) routinely have more environmental problems than more developed nations.

There is frequently a lot of political pressure for them to practice unsustainable development, and only a few less-developed countries resist this pressure. The ones who do resist/minimize the environmental damage become successful (Costa Rica), whereas the ones who practice unsustainable development are still mired in poverty (Haiti).
However, the reason many of those nations are less-developed in the first place is because they are non-capitalist.
