mad The Right-Wing Project to Cast Obama as a Muslim and Anti-Semite

We've all seen in this Forum how some of our more militant extreme right wingers have tried their best to associate Barrack Obama with Islam even suggesting that despite what he claims he cannot be trusted and they cite his middle name, Hussein as the reason! It's been a running battle here for a long time and it coincides with a recent public remark by Iowa Republican Congressman Steven King saying out loud that if Obama gets elected terrorists will be dancing in the streets even more than they did after 9-11..here's the clip:

YouTube - Rep. Steve King smears Obama: al-Qaida dancing in the street

Couple that with a Wall St. Journal poll released this week that shows that the percentage of Americans who now believe that Obama is a Muslim has gone from 8% in Dec. 2007 up to 13% now!

How can this be happening? Any thoughts? Is this another "vast Right Wing conspiracy"? Is this another great way for Republicans to scare people into voting for them? I'd like to know what you think is going on.

The Right-Wing Project to Cast Obama as a Muslim and Anti-Semite

By Ari Berman, The Nation. Posted March 13, 2008.

He's been defended by AIPAC on his Israel views, made it clear that he's Christian, yet the media keeps swallowing right-wing lies.

The Christian right is also preoccupied with Obama's religious beliefs. "Is Obama a Muslim?" the Rev. Rob Schenck, a reform Jew who converted to Christianity and now calls himself a "missionary to Capitol Hill," asked in a recent videoblog. "He may be an apostate, he may be an infidel, he may be a bad Muslim, a very, very bad Muslim, he may be an unfaithful Muslim." Schenck's videoblog was circulated by the Christian Newswire and Cross Action News, a self-described "Drudge Report for Christians." Schenck later concluded that, although not a Muslim, Obama was also "not a 'Bible Christian'" and did not practice a "confident faith." A separate report posted on the Christian Newswire recently asked if Obama was "Wearing a What-Would-Satan-Do Bracelet." And a top figure in the group Christians United for Israel, Pastor Rod Parsley, a "spiritual guide" to John McCain, repeatedly referred to Obama as "Barack Hussein Obama" before campaigning with McCain in Ohio. (Thirteen percent of registered American voters now incorrectly believe that Obama is a Muslim, according to a recent Wall Street Journal poll, up from 8 percent in December. Forty-four percent of respondents are unsure of his religion or decline to answer; only 37 percent know that he is a Christian.)

Re: The Right-Wing Project to Cast Obama as a Muslim and Anti-Semite

The Hussein crap is absolutely positively idiotic and people need to stop. Its ridiculous.

Kings comments, if he would've been intelligent and left out the stupid crap about his name, wouldn't have been too bad. Overly hyperbolic with the "Dancing in the street" thing? Sure, but I don't have any more of an issue of him saying they'd be happy because he'd pull us out and "surrender" any more than people who say they'd be excited with Bush/McCain becuase they can keep killing our men and recruiting. Its partisan politics, yes, but its not just pure smearing like the middle name BS

Zyph, I agree with your post 100%!

Had he simply said in his opinion the insurgents in Iraq would rejoice if America pulls out now that would be OK. I wouldn't agree with that but it is kosher to suggest that.

However, his intentions were not what you and I agree on. King's intentions are to rally the racists in the Republican party to work harder to defeat Obama and sadly, as the Journal polls shows it's working!

Re: The Right-Wing Project to Cast Obama as a Muslim and Anti-Semite

The Hussein **** is dumb. He's not a muslim, and people should stop claiming he is a muslim because then maybe people would realize that his pastor is bat**** crazy, saying we deserved 9/11 and had no right to complain about it, and had a sermon where he continually said "damn America for..." in a list form. I don't know why Obama goes to that place, as clearly this mother****er's crazy and I'd be really surprised if Obama genuinely believed that ****.

Only 13% of Americans think Obama is a muslim, which is only 6 times how many people are "non users" of toilet paper. It's unethical to portray him as a muslim on several levels (first, it's not the cold war, we don't have a bunch of secret muslims in our midst and we should not equate muslims to communists in the cold war, second he clearly isn't a muslim and so claiming he is is clearly playing upon unfair prejudice towards muslims, thereby legitimizing and encouraging the prejudice from which it originated). On top of this, it's stupid, people clearly aren't falling for it, and it just provides fodder for people like 26x who will seize any opportunity to portray right-wingers as racist (by conveniently forgetting that almost all right wingers don't buy into the Hussein **** and certainly aren't pushing the Hussein ****).

This **** is pathetic, its been proven that he is not a Muslim. Its sad how people resort to this type of bull**** instead of debating his positions.

In this thread I have in no way claimed that mainstream Republicans believe that Obama is a Muslim or that they are promoting that idea.

BUT...too many Republicans do believe it, are promoting it and plan on doing so all the way up until November 4th.

The fact that 62.5% more Americans now believe that Obama is Muslim is significant to me and does show that the evil use of racism is still a tool for those who want to utilize it and that is really f'd up.

Indeed, and its definitly a tool both sides employ sadly enough.

Though I will be keeping in mind this thread where right off 3 conservative minded people came out and condemned not just this guy, but anyone saying the "Hussein" and muslim crap, since I have no doubt someone like some will sometime down the line try...much like in the Spitzer thing...to paint how "republicans wouldn't condemn it" or try to defend it so I can have some proof to throw in his face

To clarify those that I've stated that have not condemned these acts in the Spitzer thread were not targeted at conservatives but rather republican right wingers. I clearly recognize you to be a conservative not one of any particular party affiliation - as I do the other two that have posted here.

To add on however just as to be condemned is this whole bull**** about not knowing where Obama's loyalty lays or whether or not he loves this country. Utter bull****.

Fair enough.

Though I will openly say. I am a republican. I may be currently registered as an Independent due to the McCain thing...i firmly plan to switch back to a republican after the election (or prior to it if McCain actually can somehow win me over) and still self identify myself as a conservative republican.

I would caution anyone to think deeply before seriously taking to heart what this article saying. This article is from The Nation. That should be enough said. It's like the tabloids at the checkout stand. And comon, we all know Brittany isn't pregnant no matter what "proof" they have.

As for these surveys they're reporting, that's just fishy. They give the percentage points but they don't give the range of results. Any real survey will give you a +/- range of how off the poll could be.

Since they didn't, I have to assume that it's at least +/- 3% but probably +/- 4%. That would mean that the company which conducted the survey would be unable to conclusively state any change in opinion.

It's just entertainment news, nothing more. Hell, Fox news is better than The Nation
