Trump’s immigration plan is a recipe for civil war

Fully enforcing border restrictions would tear America in half

Sending an amped-up ICE on a mass-deportation mission wouldn’t just be an assault on undocumented people and their families, it would be an attack on American cities, where more than 90 percent of them live. For large municipalities, rigorously enforcing immigration law is unfeasible but also politically unpopular. So-called “sanctuary cities” have declared their ongoing intention to drag their feet when it comes to cooperating with the Feds. For example, law enforcement in many cities (including New York) selectively complies with ICE requests to hold people in custody on suspicion of being undocumented. ICE can’t do their job without local cooperation and the use of these legally questionable detention orders has decreased by more than 70 percent in the last four years.

Local law enforcement might be a Trump ICE’s smallest problem. I don’t think any number of federal officers will be able, for example, to enter New York City and round up half a million people without meeting popular resistance. There are plenty of precedents. London’s Anti-Raids Network catalogs and organizes activism against immigration enforcement neighborhood by neighborhood. The group uses Twitter to spur immediate disruptions of raids in progress. American authorities may be better armed, but we also have a strong core of brave activists and organizers who are already changing the country from the street. And if only a small percentage of the various conspiracist anti-government fringe movements’ members aren’t white supremacists, the detention camps a Trump administration would have to hastily construct would push at least dozens of them over the edge.

What say you, DP? Will you join in on the front-lines in the Independence Front against President Trump?

The media hyperbolas over-the-top at this point. I've long since agree that they've abdicated their responsibility to inform to people but to try this hard to actually influence the election is just reprehensible.

How is an opinion column of a media outlet any different than folks like Sean Hannity telling people to vote for Trump or America will be gone?

Exactly. Its an opinion piece. And in my opinion the writer has some very well-founded concerns. While I do believe that the "ZOMGZ TRUMP'S GONNA START WW3" hysteria is a bit much, I do not see a Second Civil War too far out of the realm of possibility.

Personally I think the writer is full of ****, but as you and I seem to at least agree its an opinion piece and isn't representative of a media outlet trying to "influence the election" as much as it is a media outlet letting someone express their opinion.

I loath Trump and this his supporters are poster children for laws requiring voter tests so voters actually know what they are voting for. But this is nothing more than a pro-illegal alien ass kissing article trying to scare monger people into not supporting allegedly anti-ILLEGAL immigration candidates. Its **** like this might make me change my mind and go vote for Trump. Because I loath the media kissing the asses of illegals a hell lot more than I loath Trump.

In the "See Also" section I link to an assessment by a political expert on Fascism, in which he correctly ascertains that Trump is more similar to Jefferson Davis than he is Mussolini. While Trump has fascistic inclinations, I - too - agree he is more like Jefferson Davis (if Davis had defeated Buchanon and become the Democratic nominee in his stead, I think we would have seen the Confederacy and the Union exchange roles in the subsequent Civil War).

I'm down with something akin to the Anti-Raids Network. I'm not planning on taking part in armed rebellion at any point, however. I'm not raising arms against my own nation.

Oh FFS! This is getting out of hand.

"Trump's immigration plan" aside from a few things he is mouthing off about basically boils down to following existing law. I'll agree with just about anyone when talking about how ineffective our laws (and the last several administrations) have been in this area which screams taking a good look at them, but this nonsense about civil war is being hyped up by fear mongers and/or idiots.

A war to enforce our borders is not a civil war, if anything our beef is with Mexico using the USA as their overflow valve so they don't have to address their problems.

It will be slow and bloodless.

I think local law enforcement officers who are disproportionately republican will happily assist deportations if they believe the Feds will shield them from their own city governments.

Overblown hyperbole. How very Trumplike of you...

No civil war then? Damn it! I was all set to go to war against my brother.

You really think Trump's immigration plan is a good idea? I expected more from you.

You really think Trump's immigration plan is a good idea? I expected more from you.

I did not say it was a good idea, I said the OP article is absurd.

Nonsensical soundbites, how very Regressive of you.

It is very sensible and in fact acurate. If you cannot argue against something rationally, without over the top exaggeration, that is your problem.

It is very sensible and in fact acurate.

No it is not. And if you're going to claim something is accurate, at least learn how to spell the damn word right.

If you cannot argue against something rationally,

Arguing against anything Trump proposes is completely rational, because Trump is an irrational and sociopathic man.

without over the top exaggeration,

Every nonsensical absurdity spewed from the ****hole of Trump's mouth is 'over the top exaggeration' and not even remotely based within the confines of reality.

that is your problem.

Wrong again.

I think local law enforcement officers who are disproportionately republican will happily assist deportations if they believe the Feds will shield them from their own city governments.

That's the way its shaping up. What cities/regions do you think will best form the front-line against the imminent Trump Presidency?

And what are your facts to back up that claim, or counter said article?

You want me to find an article that tells you there is no civil war coming? That is your position?

You want me to find an article that tells you there is no civil war coming? That is your position?

Wrong. I want you to tell me how Trump's immigration plan is going to prevent or not change a further deterioration in civil relations.

Wrong. I want you to tell me how Trump's immigration plan is going to prevent or not change a further deterioration in civil relations.

Who made that argument?

Who made that argument?

You.:

but this nonsense about civil war is being hyped up by fear mongers and/or idiots.

So, I'll ask you again: how is Trump's immigration plan going to perpetuate the Status Quo or prevent a civil war? No credit for half-answer soundbites in the likeness of Redress.
