8. Gov. Mitt Romney (Mass.)
Has said, “I believe that abortion should be safe and legal in this country.” Supports civil unions and stringent gun laws. After visiting Houston, he criticized the city’s aesthetics, saying, “This is what happens when you don’t have zoning.”

Despite recent statements across the country by Governor Mitt Romney claiming he's pro-life, pro-family and a committed conservative, a broad investigation of his actual statements, actions, and public positions over the years indicates that he has spent his entire career speaking and governing as a liberal - and that his new found conversion to conservatism very likely coincides with his candidacy for the presidency.

Standing on stage at a Republican debate on the Gulf Coast of Florida last week, Mitt Romney repeatedly lashed out at rival Rudy Giuliani for providing sanctuary to illegal immigrants in New York City.

Yet, the very next morning, on Thursday, at least two illegal immigrants stepped out of a hulking maroon pickup truck in the driveway of Romney's Belmont house, then proceeded to spend several hours raking leaves, clearing debris from Romney's tennis court, and loading the refuse back on to the truck.

In fact, their work was part of a regular pattern. Despite a Globe story in Dec. 2006 that highlighted Romney's use of illegal immigrants to tend to his lawn, Romney continued to employ the same landscaping company -- until today. The landscaping company, in turn, continued to employ illegal immigrants.

Why We Hate Mitt Romney So Much « FITSNews For Now
Seriously, if this guy isn’t struck by lightning at some point during the 2008 campaign there’s no justice in the world. After all, it’s one thing to flip-flop on every issue under the sun in an effort to fool people into thinking you’re something you’re not, but Romney is now taking the art of bull***** to a whole new level - attacking people for doing the same stuff he did.

Romney’s latest swipe alleges that Hizzoner Giuliani is “soft on immigration” because he turned New York into a “sanctuary city” for illegal immigrants.

Of course what Romney failed to mention was that three cities in Massachusetts formally declared themselves to be “sanctuary cities” (i.e. cities that promise to provide government services to illegal immigrants) during his term as governor, and Romney did absolutely nothing about it.

ABC News: Giuliani Takes on Illegal Immigration
Sanctuary Cities Under Romney

But Giuliani's campaign said that Romney's aggressive charge on this issue is inconsistent with Romney's record. While governor of Massachusetts from 2003 until 2007, three cities in Romney's home state – Somerville, Cambridge, and Orleans -- either declared or reissued declarations stating that they are in essence sanctuary cities.

Re: Mitt Romney a phony conservative

It has been obvious from the beginning that Romney is not an extreme social conservative. He speaks the rhetoric, but from my impressions of his answers during the debates, he is pandering to the evangelical base.

I hate to break this to everyone but nobody is going to stop the flow of immigrants in from Mexico and South America. People assume too often that the President may just act alone to accomplish goals, but it takes Congress as well. I also do not believe any of the candidates want to stop illegal immigration. By letting it continue companies and affluent families are able to hire cheap labor while the taxpayers flip the bill for healthcare and education.

As far as I can tell all of the candidates in both parties are about as centrist as I ever saw. Democrats that are pro-business and Republicans that are soft on social issues. I do not even think that Huckabee is as tough on social issues as he portrays and his answers to tough questions are very evasive. So to me it is all a toss-up on both sides, they appear very similar policy-wise.

Re: Mitt Romney a phony conservative

Anytime an extreme right "conservative" starts using the RINO word, it is just sour grapes on his part that the world isn't heading in the direction he wants.
Ultra conservatives are just as dangerous, perhaps even more so, than extreme liberals. You can choose a conservative dictator but he had better be a god like human being who loves all and hates no one. Or you can have anarchy but you had better have the ability to protect your family and assets from those anarchists who have less than you.
Romney is pandering, as he did when running for governor. You have to, to get votes. Every successful politician in modern history has had to do it. He was probably very conservative when running for governor, but had to pander to liberals to get elected.
I thought, briefly, that McCain would refuse to go down that road, but lately he is sucking up to evangelicals.
They are ALL phonies...

What happened to the "statesmen" ideology of Jefferson? Men who did not seek office for profit, but to better the lives of their countrymen. I guess either all of those guys are left out or are simply too smart to run for the modern public office.

I think we have a somewhat romanticized version of the Founding Fathers. Most of them pandered just as much as modern-day politicians do...they just pandered to different groups than modern-day politicians do. They didn't have to contend with a 24/7 media, so they mostly pandered to other influential individuals rather than "the people."

I don't think profit is as big an issue as you think...most of these guys are already far wealthier than they need to be. I think that some of them have super large egos and want to be in the history books, but there are still a few who have the possibility of resurrecting Jefferonian ideals.

Who do you think they are? I think perhaps Ron Paul, and maybe Biden but who knows. Paul is very idealistic and contitutionally oreinted in all of his arguments and Biden seems to think along the lines of Hamilton in his call for the division of Iraq into states. But the days of men being nominated by their peers, rather than nominating themselves I fear are gone.

Yes, but Washington had to be the first President, as he was the icon of the country regardless of his many flaws. And yes elections were just as ruthless as today, but candidates behaved with an air of civility and sophistication that one would be hard pressed to find today.

Arlen Specter has been called a RINO by some here because he doesnt always go lock step with Bush. The RINO came out on him constantly during Gonzo-Gate

Pretty much right on that one during these past 6 years we have seen both extremes take over. The Religious Right firmly had its grip on the Republicans and the anti-war/socialist left has its hold on the Democrats. While during these primaries the RR grip on the Republicans seem to be loosening with the top candidates being right of center to moderate although Huckabee seems to be gaining some steam. Unfortuantly for the Democrats the anti-war left still has a good grip with Hillary, Obama and Edwards despite that Kunicich and Gravel are alot more left wing than they are.

Its true that McCain is doing this but his voting record shows that he believes in states rights in regards to gay marriage and abortion. Which are the only two things that matter to the Evangelicals. Im still a Republican despite I tried re-registering twice as an Independent. McCain seems to be the man that can unite the country but who knows.
