I believe that Donald Trump is the only Republican that can hope to defeat Hillary, in fact, I think he will not only beat her, but it'll be a humiliating loss for her majesty. Trump's careful to not venture to the right, as Cruz is, as in today's environment, I believe a hard right ideologue is unelectable. It'll be nearly impossible for Cruz to backtrack on any of his stances for the general, without coming off as a "flip flopper." The only thing that may be extreme about Trump is his immigration stance, but that is NOT arisen from an ideological perspective, it's all about security.
Now on why he, and only he, can defeat Hillary, is :

1. Hillary can't play the vagina card on Trump. She paid her female secretaries less then their male counterparts when she was a Senator, while Trump is an equal opportunity employer. Bill runs around on her constantly, and she hasn't taken him to task for it. Plus by rolling him out, it might show feminists that as a woman, she needs her man to make a case for her.

2. Hillary can't call Trump a warmonger. Trump is just waiting for this, so he can pounce on her about her not only voting for the Iraq war, but holding a long winded speech on the Senate floor urging her constituents to support it. Trump can then show how he opposed it from the get-go. Bam!

3. Hillary can't say he hates gays. Trump can show videos of her from her time as first lady and her failed Presidential bid in 08, where she opposed gay marriage. To my knowledge, Trump has never spoke about this issue.

4. Trump can portray her as a flip-flopper. In her 08 run, she enthusiastically supported the right to bear arms, ANY arms. Opposed to now how she wants restrictions severely undermining it.

5. Hillary will say he hates immigrants. Trump will just playback his speech where he bashed ILLEGAL immigrants. Actually, I think he's likely to increase legal immigration, as he has said.

Trump is for all intents and purposes, running a general election campaign. He has kept all social issues at a distance, as he knows that social issues are a drag on the ticket, and a loser for the general. On the Palin endorsement, I don't know how that will play out, but I think she'll be pretty much pushed to the sidelines come the general.

If it's Hillary vs. Trump, we're all screwed anyway.

In all of this support, there is little discussion on what the OP thinks Independents and Moderates will do. I would say most of this list will continue to excite those Trump already has the support of, and that is about it. If it were otherwise then general election polling would reflect the (at least hint of the) "humiliating" results on the way.

You may want to look at some of Trump's flip flops before you zero in exclusively on Clinton's.

it is hard to think of two less liked people.

I can't understand why anyone would ever consider voting for either one.

Because we've convinced ourselves that voting third party is "throwing your vote away". So this is what we get.

Considering Trump has always been unashamed and upfront about them and the reasons he's changed his mind, no gold for the haters there. He's not been a politician and thus gets the everyman pass - normal folks change their minds about the issues throughout their lifetimes. Politicians have to stick with the view they campaigned upon - keep your promises.

Experience and reality is what has convinced us of that. Even when the third party fever was the highest in our history, at best the third party candidate has been a spoiler.

Go Trump GO! Absolutely! I'd LOVE for Trump to be the GOP nominee! Please, oh please, oh PLEASE let Trump be the GOP nominee!

He's running for POTUS, he's not going to get a pass.

As far as keeping his promises if you think he's going to be able to get Mexico to build a wall, and he's going to round up and deport 12 illegals, and he's going to close down Mosques, and he's going to levy a 35% tax on US companies that build products overseas, and on and on. I got beautiful bridge in Brooklyn for sale.

He's saying EXACTLY what his crowds want to hear. But there's no way he will, or even in most cases he CAN( laws, the Constitution, etc. will get in the way) do 5% of what he's saying.

Wouldn't doubt if Bernie ran as an Independent [speaking of spoiler]

The extent of this argument boils down to, "well Trump can argue that Hillary is being hypocritical or flip flopping," but those are pretty much true statements of every political opponent. And it would seem incredibly ironic and unlikely for Trump, a man who stated that he would run as a Democrat if he ever ran for office, stated that he felt President Obama was doing a really good job in 2009, and donated more money to Democrats than Republicans (until 5 years ago) to succeed at making Hillary look like she is being inconsistent or a flip-flopper.

I would also note that Trump is the only Republican Candidate (outside of Jeb Bush) with a double digit net unfavorability rating amongst Independents (-27) and the only Republican Candidate with a net unfavorability rating amongst Democrats that is below -40 (it sits at -70).

Yes, he will, and he has been, precisely for the reasons I gave. Yes, he will have to stick to his campaign promises - but he is not hampered by past campaign promises as the other long time politicians running are.

Trump has the added bonus of making his campaign promises the starting point in negotiation, his supporters understand that. Something apparently, the kneejerk haters fail to grasp.

While I 100% agree with you Glen - get ready for the Trump sycophants living in denial to tell you that you are simply so afraid of their great candidate that you are playing a game of "please don't throw me in the briar patch". Its sad and pathetic.

Every progressive with political acumen I know of is convinced Trump would be worst than Goldwater in 64. Bring him on!!!!!!!

And that's why we get trash vs bigger trash

You folks just keep thinking that, and playing your paint the opponent games. There's a very large crow prepared and waiting for your dinner table.

Keep blaring it out - Free Mumia! And make sure to also remind everyone how you are "progressives". That will do the trick nicely.

Perhaps. Though I like the Giant Douche vs the Turd Sandwich image better.

Look, TR was arguably the most significant third party hopeful we have ever had, and even he realized he wasn't getting the presidency from there.

The problem is determining whether a President that smells of corruption or one with no experience and puffs populist muck is worse.

this post is an admission of being a partisan shill.

if you think it is good that a huge portion of the voting population would turn out for Trump, you are missing the bigger picture....or your "shillyness" doesn't care about the bigger picture.

I could not care less what crap you spew as long as your boy Trump gets the nomination. Then I am more than willing to bet my existence here against yours with the loser having to go away for life.

ready for that?

I read yesterday Trump's getting a lot of support from Evangelists. The 3 time married, casino owning, strip club owning, swears like a sailor, doesn't know The Bible from an atlas, greed loving, money loving Trump is getting love from the family values Christian right because he's telling them how religious and Godly he is now. Yep, he's changed that much huh?

He's trolling and lying to them, and he's trolling the rest of his followers too.

I believe Trump would win over Hillary. She is strongly disliked by many on the left as well. He will have the populist appeal, and 2016 will be a populist election.

Sorry - I really didn't mean to post so forthrightly - I really did mean to post it a-la Br'er Rabbit.

Br'er Rabbit's one of my favorite stories...and I've also posted several times, "Please, please, Br'er Conservative, don't make Mr. Trump your nominee! Skin me, boil me in oil and eat me, but please don't make that there Mr. Trump your nominee!"

Bawn and raised in that political briar patch, Br'er Conservative! Bawn and raised in that political briar patch!

Good to know you're that desperate, and I refuse to make bets with Alex Baldwin types. It's will be good enough for me that all your hatred is recorded here and can be referred back to when the world is greeting President Trump.

Actually, no. Biography channel already blew your hate screed. He's been talking about his own relationship with God and religion since he was in his twenties.
