Rick Perry suggests US military role in Mexico drug war

This should insure the complete and total collapse of a campaign which was already losing altitude at a record breaking rate.

Seems you guys have somewhat the same reaction to this as I do. Is Perry a total loon or are his handlers working for one of the other candidates? I've never seen a serious candidate (except Palin) be so out of touch with reality.

The U.S. conquered Mexico in the 90's with NAFTA. There's no reason for us to invade, and it has nothing we want. Maybe if it were 15 years ago and our manufacturing sector was mainly outsourcing to Mexico, this could be likely; but now that our industries are mainly outsourcing to China and India, nobody gives a toss what is happening in Mexico.

of the three of you, how many are conservative republicans (the base Perry needs to win back)?

this is precisely the kind of thing he needs to do to combat the "weak on immigration" image that hurt him so badly coming out of the last debate.

The drug war has been a endless battle since prohibition days and before and yet....no results.

There have been results. American now leads the world in incarcerating people, mostly non-violent drug offenders. The War on Drug has voraciously eaten up precious resources, increased crime, and is essentially institutionalized racism. One can even argue that that War on Drugs was the impetus behind our meth epidemic. If drugs were legalized, then there would not have been an incentive to create meth.

There have been plenty of results, just not good ones.

Btw I agree with the incarceration rate that our country has, it a shame and every day each and every one of us violates one federal law of some sort that could imprison us up to eight years.

We're already fighting a drug war in Colombia, so why not Mexico too? Hey, let's just send troops all over the world fighting drugs, while we advertise the hell out of every prescription med that might make a buck for big pharma? Irrational? What's irrational about our war on drugs? Next, you'll say that Perry is irrational!

Oh, if I have to tell you that is satire.... you're satirically challenged.

To this day, marijuina is still a Schedule I drug, meaning that is highly addictive with no medical benefits. Lumping marijuana, homosexuality, Jews and Commies into one grand conspiracy, a paranoid Richard Nixon launched America's "war on pot" 30 years ago. Here are the tapes to prove it.
Once-Secret "Nixon Tapes" Show Why the U.S. Outlawed Pot | | AlterNet

Nixon was just continuing in the perverse groove of Anslinger who made statements such as

“Reefer makes darkies think they’re as good as white men.”

“Marihuana leads to pacifism and communist brainwashing”

“You smoke a joint and you’re likely to kill your brother.”

“Marijuana is the most violence-causing drug in the history of mankind.”

Our War on Drugs is not based on logic and reason, but is riddled with fear, paranoia, ignorance, corporate profits, lies, and flat-out racism.

Oh I agree with you and I know this, billions of dollars spent on a war of futility which could have been redirected to those who are really in need, especially those who have been kicked to the curb, or put back into the taxpayers wallets. The prisons in this country have become warehouses and corporations, I don't think this was the intentions of our founding fathers.

For wanting to "cut spending," would this not cost MORE money?

I know that we are in agreement and I was not debating you. I was just adding to the conversation.

Cut spending...where to we begin pick a program and we will save. I just believe we should mind our own backyard and not everyone else's, take care of our own first.

I know, all is good and in this regard I am of the same point of view.

We're already fighting a drug war in Colombia, so why not Mexico too?

if we could replicate the turn-around that we have seen in Colombia in Mexico...

that would be outstanding.

Perry's a big 10th Amendment guy - I could see him kicking marijuana legalization/criminalization back to the states for them to handle. but "protecting our border" is hardly "all over the world".

depends on how you measure - if you combine it with a state-by-state campaign to roll back our illegal population, the expense of securing the border could reasonably be offset by the gains of not having to support a large illegal populace.

A) Half of Columbia belongs to marxist rebels
B) It's within another nations borders... not along our own.

Perry is strong on the tenth and I like this, but the drugs wars we have no business being in anywhere.

Good point, perhaps streamlining the immigration process also would help.

O yeah:

C) Perry is talking out of his rear and would never be able to do this.

Cant forget that one.
