    Term Limits..........again

    Term Limits........again

The GOP is submitting to Congress a Constitutional Amendment to limit the terms of Senators and Members of the House. The proposal would limit Senators to a maximum of two, six year terms and Members to three, two year terms.

I say this is as stupid, and destructive as the limits imposed by the 22d Amendment on the office of the President. If any of you out there really want term limits, then why not real term limits: One federal elective office per person per lifetime. Now that's term limits. Anything else is just an arbitrary figure.

I came into this world fighting, screaming and covered in someone else's blood. I have no problem going out the same way.

I'm usually against most term limits, because I find that it either exhausts the pool of talented politicians or it arbitrarily reduces the ability for said skilled and talented politician to continue to serve in that capacity. Furthermore, such democratic proposals also harm purposefully aristocratic institutions from operating as designed, like the Senate.

Rather than term limits, I would rather see the unconscionable perks eliminated. We should NOT be providing senators and congressmen with lifetime retirement benefits, health care, etc. Instead pay them a reasonable salary and let them fund their own 401K and health insurance and they take whatever is in the 401K and their healthcare policy with them when they leave office. And they would not be able to exempt themselves from any law, rule, or regulation imposed on anybody else.

Further we need an ironclad law, preferably a constitutional amendment, that no Congressperson, President, or bureaucracy can provide a benefit for any person, group, entity, demographic, etc. that is not also provided to all. And all campaign contributions received by anybody running as senator or state representative must come from the people within his/her own state or district.

That would take care of it I think. The professional politician would be out of business at the federal level, the permanent political class would cease to exist, and we would likely start electing true public servants again. Most would serve a term or two and then go back home to live and work under the laws they pass. Those who truly love their government roles would stay and provide valuable experience to guide the newbies coming on.

Increasing the number of lame duck folks is not likely to work out nearly as well as some folks envision. What little accountability an elected official has to the voters is largely due to their desire to retain that job or to seek a higher office - removing the incentive to please the voters (in exchange for another term) is not necessarily such a great idea.

I prefer some being experienced. Maybe a mechanism by which 25 or 50 percent can stay longer and the members of Congress and Senate determine which ones?

The Red Socks are one of the best soccer teams in the NHL right now.

    That's to be expected.
