Who wins the NBA Championship this year?

Today, camp opened for NBA teams, and in only a few weeks, the battle will begin.

Who is going to win it all?

I know, I know, I am biased, but I still think this will be the Houston Rockets' year. Why?

1) They made the playoffs last year without Yao Ming, who was missing during most of their 22 game winning streak. Yao is back, and he is healthy. Dikembe Mutombo started at center while Ming was out last year, and he did an excellent job. He would be a starter on most teams, but is the backup center for the Rockets, and an excellent player to spell Ming during the game. If Yao gets into foul trouble, in comes a fresh Mutombo, who is also a monster on the boards. Say it again Dikembe.....

Dikembe Mutombo - "Not in my house. Get that **** out of here."
**Mutombo wags his finger**

2) Tracy McGrady? Enough said.

3) Ron Artest - Acquired in the off season. Very solid numbers. You are looking at another Rockets superstar here. His antics of the past are now behind him.

4) Steve Francis - He sat out last season with an injury. Francis will be ready this year, although he won't be 100% until about 4 weeks into the season. He has the potential to put up McGrady-like numbers. Key is does he have the heart? I think he does this year. He is pumped, and in excellent shape, unlike last year, when he showed up to camp overweight, ending up with his injury before the season even started.

5) Brent Barry - Acquired from San Antonio to add some more depth to an already deep bench.

6) Finally, don't forget Luis Scola. He was a rookie last year, and played like a pro. He ain't a rookie this year.

Add Artest, Francis, and Barry to an already overtalented team, with Yao Ming back at 100%, and you have a juggernaut.

This is an extremely dangerous team, folks. The Houston Rockets are going to take it all.

Re: Who wins the NBA Championship this year?

You know what Dan, i think i am going to agree with you in the West, but i also have a hard time seeing them beat a Bynum centered Laker team in 7.

My ideal LA lineup: would dominate any team.

C- Bynum
PF- Gasol
SF-Ariza
SG-Bryant
PG- Odom

My ideal Houston Lineup: is equal to San Antonio's IMHO

C- Yao
PF- Scola
SF- Artest
SG- Head (Francis's game was based on superior athleticism which he no longer possesses)
PG- McGrady

The east is hard to factor, but if Darius Miles has a complete recovery from knee surgery, Celtics will win by a long shot again...

The Celtics should start the season as the favorite.

The Cs started last season with the Big Three and a bunch of unproven support players.

GO CELTICS!

Re: Who wins the NBA Championship this year?

I like the Rockets in the west, but if you think Artest's antics are over, think again. As a huge Pacer fan, I have reason to doubt he's done just yet. He really is a mental case, but at the same time he's the best player in the entire league at both ends of the court. Let's just see how he likes sharing the spotlight with McGrady and Yao. The damage he did the Pacers they have yet to recover from. I can see a similar situation in Houston that existed in Indy (Miller and O'Neal).

Having said that, I believe a healthy Laker team (w/ Bynum) is going to be awfully tough. If there's a team that can dethrone them in the West, it's definitely a healthy Rocket team with a sane Artest. I believe SA is past it's prime and I can't see Dallas being a factor either.

Out of the East, it's down to two teams - Boston and Orlando as I see it. Boston is head and shoulders the cream of the crop out East and quite possibly in the league. Seeing the defensive juggernaut that they are going up against the Rockets with Artest (the DPOY every year as far as I'm concerned) in the Finals would be sweet.

So, my prediction....

Lakers vs. Celtics - Celtics in 6
