By Matt Schudel

Jim McKay, the sportscaster who brought the "thrill of victory and the agony of defeat" into U.S. homes as the longtime host of "ABC's Wide World of Sports" and who anchored the network's coverage of the terrorist killings of 11 Israeli athletes at the 1972 Summer Olympic Games, died June 7 at his farm in Monkton, Md., north of Baltimore. He was 86. The cause of death was not disclosed.

Re: Jim McKay dies

I always took him for granted. But there is no one who has come since who was as good as he. Or even in his mold.

FWIW, I was unable to watch the Munich tragedy coverage as it happened because I was in basic training.

Re: Jim McKay dies

He was a true pioneer. I always liked sports growing up (of course, Cosell took the reins by the time I was watching) and watching WWOS was the coolest thing. It was revolutionary because it took sports that otherwise would receive absolutely no face time on television and brought them into your living room. What was more amazing is that you were actually interested.

I still remember turning it on Saturdays and watching Olympic skiiers doing huge jumps, gymnasts back when Comaneci was making history, hell, even fencing. I never knew that active sports outside the "big 4" could be interesting to watch.

Re: Jim McKay dies

He was a gem to sport and the last of a dying breed. RIP, Jim... you'll be sorely missed.
