Former Gophers football coach Tracy Claeys felt compelled Wednesday to defend his work after Athletics Director Mark Coyle described why he fired Claeys in a news conference Tuesday.

In an interview with WCCO-AM, Claeys said he understood that the firing revolved around his support for the player-led, two-day boycott of team activities in mid-December. The players were upset about 10 teammates being indefinitely suspended for suspected involvement in an alleged sexual assault and wanted those players to receive better due process.

“Whoever the next person is better have a pretty ironclad contract if you are going to be based on emails from fans and winning nine games isn’t good enough,” said Claeys, who departed with a $500,000 buyout. “They better protect themselves a little bit.

Claeys repeated that his tweet in support of the players boycott on Dec. 15 could have been worded better, but was proud of how the boycott shed light on the perceived shortcomings of university-led investigations.

“There is a fairness deal there that I think needs to be straightened out,” Claeys said. “I wouldn’t change anything.

Have never been more proud of our kids. I respect their rights & support their effort to make a better world!

I was pretty surprised when I read this, talking this way is just not allowed....women are the victims not men, we all gotta get that straight. Those who dont conform will have their heads rolled.

The firing of Tracy Claeys at Minnesota has not been sitting well with one former Minnesota head coach. Jerry Kill, who resigned from his post as head coach of the Gophers to ultimately be replaced by his assistant, Claeys, has always said he would never waver from supporting the Gophers program, but he seems to be singing a much different tune now.

“I won’t be stepping foot back in the stadium, and I won’t be stepping back into the university,” Kill said during a radio interview in Minnesota on Wednesday, according to The Star Tribune.

“We’ll always come to Minnesota. My daughter is there. We love Minnesota,” Kill went on to say during the radio interview. “I’ll go to every baseball game, Minnesota Vikings] football game, anything else. But I will not ever be in that stadium or that complex. And they’re building a new complex. We had a lot to do with that. I won’t ever see it. But I wish them all the luck in the world. I hope the decision that [Minnesota AD Mark Croyle] made was right. I do hope the program continues to do well. I just wish people would be straightforward

I'm guessing he was fired because he wasn't the AD's hire in the first place. ADs always want their guy as the coach. The other possibility is the president/rich donors/board of trustees stepped in because contrary to your agenda, it looks terrible for a 50 year old man to not only publicly oppose his bosses' actions, encourage his players to boycott and put at risk a luxurious (for the AD) bowl, and support likely rapists. Maybe they just don't want to be the next penn state...or notre dame, or duke - harboring rapists *because* they're jocks - and it's not worth the risk

Sometimes i think football teams might as well be gangs the way they commit serious crimes and cover for each other, including the supposed adults

Also 9 wins with that schedule is nothing to brag about, and $500k for getting fired is a hell of a lot more compensation than his non-rapist players will be getting. He's no victim

Funny, reading that link, it seems a lot of the players walked back the boycott after reading exactly what "allegedly" happened.

Apparently, men's rights include the right to sexually assault women.

Everyone involved including the girl were stupid and deserve what they got

After seeing what happened to the Duke Lacrosse team, I tend to wait for actual proof and don't take an accuser's or a prosecutor's word as gospel.

The coach had more than his support for his team that did him in... he made a fatal mistake of going 9 and 4, but getting spanked 31-14 to the Gophers mortal enemy - Wisconsin. Add the two together, and here we are.

That's what's at the root of the "movement". "Taking back" whatever untermenschen feel they lost, when in fact they still wont get laid except by force.

That isnt quite what I should have said

If the facts are correct - and we dont know if they are or not - but if they are then what the girl did was merely stupid wheres at least 9 of the football players committed a crime

Better to have said they all acted stupid and paid a heavy price for it

Um, it's pretty standard practice. When a student who acts as an ambassador to the school allegedly engages in behavior that reflects poorly on the school, the status is suspended.

a great motto for the liberal Democrats.

Pretty snazzy right?

The abuse of men on campus is pretty standard practice, and that is what this is about.

So a woman reports being sexually assaulted and you feel the men involved were being abused?

I feel that when a football coach stands up for the rights of his men that he should not be fired for doing so. I also feel that when a university suspends and expels students that it must be clear on why, and "we decided that they participated in asexual assault" does not cut it, the details are important, especially when they claim they are innocent. The university last I looked still had not done so.

Being suspended for suspected involvement in a sexual assault is not a violation of their rights, that is a standard practice in many industries. Being suspected of committing a crime will get alot of people suspended from activities

How are they being abused?

Being on a football team is a privilege, not a right.

OH Bull****....at most universities the football program pays the way for much of the entire athletic system, for no pay, only a degree maybe and oh by the way our universities suck now when it comes to their former occupation.....education.....so a degree sure aint what it used to be.

And least you forget civility demands justice which in part is fairness.

Even though so few can manage today that is the goal.

The university must treat men right.

Especially football players.

Cause they have power.

They can quit.

?

If they want to stay on the football team, that is contingent on the expectation that they maintain good behavior.

If the University is going to be allowed to harm men thusly that is contingent upon them upholding reasonable standards of justice.

If the University is going to be allowed to harm men thusly that is contingent upon them upholding reasonable standards of justice.

What harm? The harm was done when the allegations came to light. If the allegations turn out to be false, then they can make a case for harm against those who made the false allegations.

If the allegations turn out to be true, then the harm was self-inflicted.

In either case, the university is not the source of the harm. They are simply following their policies. If a kid doesn't want to be kicked off their football team, i would recommend that they avoid raping any women. Barring that, i would recommend that they avoid rushing to the defense of those accused of rape.

I can respect that.
