Arguably the prettiest, and certainly one of the nicest, woman to reach #1 in the Open era of tennis, recently married and again injured Ana Ivanovic-at age 29 has retired from Professional tennis. Last year she was in the semis of the French, a tournament she won almost a decade ago, and went to the finals in the premier event in Cincinnati but saw her ranking steadily wane after yet another injury. Most tennis fans were also fans of this classy lady from Serbia and hope she has a happy retirement and a rewarding family life

The women's game has been a messy revolving door for so long now, it's hard to keep track of who's where.

She is definitely a hottie.

its funny how things go-for years I heard that there was not enough competition among the women when BJK, Maggie Court or Chris Evert were winning everything while the men had dozens of men get to the GS finals-Smith,Lewis, Tanner, Newcomb, Rosewall, Borg, McEnroe, Connors, Telcher, Kriek, Geruliatis, Ashe etc but now in the men's came its Novak, Rafa, Andy and Stan while the women's GS finals have featured, Serena, Ana, Caroline, Garbine, Aga, Angelique, Simona etc

She is definitely a hottie.

I have seen her play live at least a couple dozen times and have briefly spoken to her. She's actually even prettier in person. she also is one of the nicest athletic superstars I have ever met. When she was hurt and had to default against Kim Cljsters in the ATP Cincinnati semi finals a few years ago, Kim (also very popular among fans and other players) took the microphone and noted that Ana was nice when she was a junior, Ana was nice to everyone when she was a young pro, Ana was nice to everyone when she was world #1, Ana was nice to everyone when she had some set backs and Ana (who by then was back up in the top 15) still nice to everyone. In a tour like that which is known for catty and cutthroat attitudes, apparently Ana was well liked despite the fact she had just about everything going for her

She does ok with endorsements for obvious reasons

Amazing that 29 is retirement age. It's a tough sport and shows how incredibly durable Serena is.

I have seen almost every top tennis player save Justin Henin, who has been #1 over the last 3 decades. Serena is without a doubt, 20% better as an athlete than any of them-her sister and Kim Cljsters are the two closest two her. Stefi Graf was probably the second fastest and Monica Seles might have been close to her in reflexes. But that is why Serena is the greatest woman in tennis history. Some women were close to her in serves (Venus, Sam Stosur, Dinara Safina). some could hit forehands near hers-Graf, Ivanovic. some were almost as fast as she-Graf, Seles and some had backhands near hers-Seles, Mauresmo etc.

but when you write down the five best serves in women's history-Serena is at the top
when you write down the five best forehands in tennis-Serena is on that list, same with backhands and her service return is probably top three as well. and when you put down speed, she's tops too

In other words there are other players who have big weapons and there are others whose biggest weapon might rival Serena's biggest weapon, but Serena has several and most of those other girls only had one or two. which is why Serena has all those titles and gold medals

Strong, fast, durable...yeah. She has the whole package. May be the best we will ever see.

Having seen about all of them I agree with you: caroline Wozniacki, #2. Stefi Graf might have had the best figure of them all and Garbine Muguruza is stunning in person. Other contenders include Julia Goerges and Andrea Petkovic of Germany, Camila Giorgi of Italy, Johanna Konta of England, Madison Keyes and Louisa Chirico of the USA, Genie Bouchard of Canada, Yaroslava Shvedova of Kazahkstan and the Pliskova twins of the Czech republic. That's based on ones I have met and seen playing

Average player in a poor era

Average player in a poor era

a poor era-The Williams sisters were at their peak, Kim Cljsters is one of the greatest athletes in women's sports and while Justin Henin retired, she was major league. Dinara Safina had all the talent in the world-just was a head case. And Sharapova was at her peak too-she had beaten Serena at the US Open a couple years before. Average players don't end up #1 and win 15 tournaments

here are the top players from the year that Ivanovic was ranked first at some point

Serbia Jelena Janković - Rome, Beijing, Stuttgart and Moscow (4)
Russia Dinara Safina - Berlin, Los Angeles, Montréal and Tokyo (Tier I) (4) (HALL OF FAME)
United States Serena Williams - Bangalore, Key Biscayne, Charleston, and US Open (4) (obvious Hall of Fame)
Russia Elena Dementieva - Dubai, Beijing Olympics, and Luxembourg (3)
Serbia Ana Ivanovic - Indian Wells, French Open, and Linz (3)
Russia Maria Kirilenko - Estoril, Barcelona and Seoul (3)
Poland Agnieszka Radwańska - Pattaya, Istanbul, and Eastbourne (3)
Russia Maria Sharapova - Australian Open, Doha, and Amelia Island (3) (will be in the Hall of Fame)
United States Venus Williams - Wimbledon, Zürich, and WTA Tour Championships (3) (will be in the hall of fame)
Denmark Caroline Wozniacki - Stockholm, New Haven, and Tokyo (Tier III) (3)
United States Lindsay Davenport - Auckland and Memphis (2) (in the Hall of Fame)
Italy Sara Errani - Palermo and Portorož (2)

With the exception of a couple it's a bang average list of has been and nearly rans. Serena turns it on like a tap whenever she wants to.

Serena is clearly the greatest female tennis player (maybe female athlete) in history. Venus is top ten of all time. Lindsay Davenport is top 15, Sharapova is top 15,

Jankovic, Wozniacki and Safina were all ranked #1. Those three and Dementieva are all top 30 in the open era.

Sharapova top 15 all time? That's a stretch for me. Lots of promise but it never really panned out for her.

Career Grand slam. five majors, 35 titles, Olympic Silver medal, WTA finals champion, Fed cup Champion where she went 7-1.

My rankings would be like this

1) Serena
2) Graf
3) Martina
4) Chris Evert
5) Monica Seles (but for the stabbing-she might have been 2, she was destroying everyone at the time she was hurt)
6) BJK
7) Court (i find her overrated because most of her titles were at the Australian which was the weak sister back then due to it being late in the year and she almost never was up against top talent)
8) Venus Williams-not only did she win a bunch of majors-she won 4 Gold medals
9) Justine Henin-won 7 grand slams though never Wimbledon
10) lots of people put Evonne Goolagong here but she never won the US Open though she was in the finals 4 years in a row. I would Put Sharapova there based on the career grand slam. EG did win 7 Major titles
11) Goolagong-see above
12) Martina Hingis-number one singles player for three years and now the best doubles player Five grand slam singles
13) Lindsay Davenport-I put here there because she was not only a top singles player with three majors and a gold medal, she also was one of the best women's doubles players ever
14) Maureen Connolly. While she only won during the amateur era, she was incredibly dominant in her short career winning the grand slam which few others have done. What cuts against her is a shorter career and the fact that the athletic standards in the 50s were much lower
15) Kim Clijsters-along with Serena and Stefi-one of the top three pure athletes the sport has seen. Four majors, Four finals, two major doubles titles, Runnerup once, three times tour champion and 41 singles titles. 11 Doubles titles, ranked first in the world at one time in both. Fed Cup champion.
