ESPN fires Mike Ditka for calling Obama worst president

Ditka is criticized by the left, praised by the right. The Dixie Chicks were praised by the left, criticized by the right. What on earth is your point? The DCs received fewer Criticism Points than Ditka?

The DC's actually benefited.

Oh? How so? Please enlighten us.

Country stations across the United States have pulled the Chicks from playlists following reports that lead singer Natalie Maines said in a concert in London earlier this week that she was "ashamed the president of the United States is from Texas."

CNN.com - Dixie Chicks pulled from air after bashing Bush - Mar. 14, 2003

That's a benefit for them?

They had insulted their audience but they were praised by the guardians of "higher culture."

CounterPunch

Jun 10, 2006 - Who would have thought when the Dixie Chicks were selling more than 10 million copies each of “Wide Open Spaces” (1998) and “Fly” (1999) ...

LOL. They were pulled off of dozens of radio stations.

Maines's remark sparked intense criticism;[44] media commentators claimed that she should not criticize Bush on foreign soil. Maines responded, "I said it there 'cause that's where I was."[45]
The comment by Maines angered many country music fans and was financially damaging.[46] Following the uproar and the start of a boycott of Dixie Chicks' music, which, in turn, caused Dixie Chicks' cover of the Fleetwood Mac song "Landslide" to fall sharply from No. 10 down to 43 on the Billboard Hot 100 in a single week. It dropped out of the entire chart the following week. Maines attempted to clarify matters on March 12 by saying, "I feel the President is ignoring the opinions of many in the U.S. and alienating the rest of the world."[47]
The statement failed to appease her critics, and Maines issued an apology on March 14: "As a concerned American citizen, I apologize to President Bush because my remark was disrespectful. I feel that whoever holds that office should be treated with the utmost respect. We are currently in Europe and witnessing a huge anti-American sentiment as a result of the perceived rush to war. While war may remain a viable option, as a mother, I just want to see every possible alternative exhausted before children and American soldiers' lives are lost. I love my country. I am a proud American."[48][49]
In wake of the statement against Bush, many supporters of the Dixie Chicks dropped their support (including their sponsor Lipton). In one famous anti-Dixie Chicks display, former fans were encouraged to bring their CDs to a demonstration at which they would be crushed by a bulldozer. In one poll by an Atlanta radio station, 76 percent of listeners who participated responded "if I could, I'd take my CDs back".[50] Bruce Springsteen and Madonna both felt compelled to come out in support of the right of the band to express their opinions freely; however, Madonna herself postponed and then altered the April 1 release of her "American Life" video in which she threw a hand grenade toward a Bush look-alike, after witnessing the backlash against the Chicks.[51][52]

Yes, he's obnoxious. Race is clearly something ESPN doesn't mind people talking about. However, you rarely see Smith stray into the political arena (i.e. endorsing or slamming certain politicians or candidates). He generally keeps it at least tangentially related to sports.

ESPN should be talking about race. Race and sports coincide together. It is alarming to see so many athletes (the majority of which are black) engaging in trifling and lawless behavior.

Benefited how? It essentially killed their career as a band (which was already on the downslide anyway).

Killed thier career? They still made a number 1 album in 2006. There are plenty of artists that would like to be that "dead"

It definitely happened. Defending McNabb the choker? Next thing you are going to tell me Tony Romo is captain clutch.

There is absolutely no reason to bring Romo into this thread

LOL. They were pulled off of dozens of radio stations.

". . . After taking some time out-Ms. Robison and Ms. Maguire had twins-the Dixie Chicks have come back with their new album “Taking the Long Way” which has topped the charts in its first two weeks. “We could have pandered,” said Ms. Maines to the New York Times. They did just the opposite. No apologies. Words of defiance and staying true to themselves flow through the lyrics. . . "

I still think IMUS holds the record for racist comments with his, " mop haired pickaninnies " comment about a black women's basketball team.
or words to that effect.....

(facepalm)

Despite your quote marks that isn't what he said

Stephen A Smith is a frequent guest on Hannity.

I guess in your world everything I posted about stations not playing their songs, and their songs and sales tanking, and demonstrations where people destroyed their CD's shows that the Dixie Chicks were 'applauded' for their comments about Bush. lol

Night.

The Dixie Chicks were basically blackballed by country music radio and although "The Long Way Around" received a couple of Grammys it was considered a flop for the band based on the successes of their two previous albums. It was also the last album they ever recorded.

The band never recovered from Maines's comments. It pretty much killed their careers.
