I don't know if there's other UFC fans here, I hope so.

Do you think Connor McGregor will win his fight at lightweight? This guy is on a huge roll after his quick knockout of Aldo. He's bringing some much needed attention back to the UFC.

McGregor's good. He brings a lack of repetition to the ring which makes him harder to get the upper hand on. He has very quick responses, as well, and that allows him to fake out and change things up with ease. But above all, his aggressive 'first' nature, I think, catches his opponents off guard and puts him in a superior position from the start.

In fact, his lightning quick surprise strikes are what made him so quick to take down Aldo in December.

He's mad smart too when it comes to fighting, I heard he was shadowboxing along to a monitor showing one of Aldo's fights, Connor saw that Aldo always opened his fights with that same sequence of feinting punches before attempting the left power punch. And Connor practiced how to counter that for months. Smart.

You're right about his responses, I've been thinking how fast that left hand was since the fight happened.
I also think his trash talking really worked against Aldo, and got him mad enough to not fight smart. Connor is the loudest fighter since Tyson, without all that crazy talk about eating people's children and whatnot.

That's funny - I hadn't given any thought to any psych play with his trash talk. Yeah, he might be WWF at moments only it seems less hokey and more real when he goes there.

Its the Irish in him, the scorn is real with the Irish.

Hah - everybody wants the Irish to like them and when he doesn't they're all sad. It would be like pissing of Jack Septic Eye and going 'whatdidido'.

I'm not sure who that is, but if he's Irish he must be pissed off 90% of the time.

I saw this titled angry leprechaun and thought it looks a lot like Connor.

I have Irish roots too lol.

He's the real deal when he's striking. I would say that he easily one of the top strikers in the UFC. I think the jury is still out on his ground game, but hopefully RDA takes him there so we can get a good look at what he offers on the mat. If the fight stays on the feet I pick McGregor pretty easily.

Most of UFC fighting is about striking these days it seems, the submissions aren't as common as they used to be. Connor definitely has good striking skills. People were saying that by moving up in weight he's in jeopardy, but his regular weight is 170 I hear, so he probably needs to move up in weight.

Fighters have really stepped up in the past 5 or so years with effective take down defense training, submission defense, and getting back to their feet. With that said, Non-US fighters tend to have a large weakness when it comes to wrestling, and that's what makes me question Conor's grappling ability more than anything. I think 155 is a good weight for McGregor. Like you said, he walks around at 170 or more. I think he will be even better without the huge weight cut.

Good point, though there are some excellent foreign grapplers like the Gracies, though they don't do MMA anymore.
Connors a smart fighter, he's gonna want to stay standing and he's tricky too, so he will try to get Dos Anjos to fight his fight.

He's my favorite in the UFC for a variety of reasons, but biggest is that he backs up his talk with results.

The trash talking serves two purposes in my mind:

1. Self promotion. Floyd Mayweather was a genius in this regard and you either loved him or hated him, same with McGregor. But the results are the same, people either REALLY want to see you win or REALLY want to see you lose, boosting ticket sales and hype.

2. Gets in people's heads on an emotional level. I respect Aldo and think he's a great fighter, but he should have ignored McGregor and written him off. The guy had too much pride and he allowed McGregor to hurt it. Therefore, his expectations going into the fight were heightened. He was defending his title, which already puts the pressure on you. No need to take McGregor personally.

Will he beat Rafael? I think many people are betting against McGregor, Rafael will be his toughest opponent to date and out classes McGregor in size alone. I think where McGregor beats Rafael is he has a high fighting IQ that allows him to make smart decisions and adjust mid fight. If all things are equal (height, reach, size, strength, etc) McGregor wins out alone in mental toughness and fighter IQ. I think he loses, but I would not be remotely surprised if he wins. And if he does, I'll never doubt the man again.

I think RDA could win by knockout but not by submission. McGregor is quick on the floor and can get himself out of tight situations. If McGregor can last a couple rounds and break RDA down mentally, that might open him up to a mistake for McGregor to take advantage of as McGregor is quick and brutal when left with an opening. I could see the fight lasting the full rounds and McGregor winning by ultimately landing more hits. But I could very well see him getting knocked out.

Well said man. Another thing I'd add, is that McGregor talks to build his own confidence too, much like Muhammad Ali did. Theres a interview when McGregor talking about how he lost some early fights based on fear, and how he overcame that by basically talking s**t in his head about his opponent. GSP used this technique too.

Dos Anjos is gonna want to fight McGregor on the mat I think, and that's the biggest threat to Connor. He practices avoiding the ground like crazy though, so I hope he can make Raphael fight his fight.
I see the fight going longer than one round like the Aldo fight was. RDO ain't gonna be as easy to get out I think.

I honestly don't see RDA getting McGregor on the mat, I've seen how McGregor responds to that in the past and the guy is quick reactive to those situations. I see RDA knocking him out, but I don't think McGregor is an easy opponent to get into submission.

I've also noticed this bout that McGregor has done a lot less trash talking. He may be waiting until the week of the event, but I think he's also not setting himself up for failure like Ronda Rousey did and being realistic about his chances. I think as smart a fighter as he is, he can do it.

McGregor wants all his opponents to fight standing up as that's his strength, and he trains his a** off for it. He's one of the smartest fighters I've seen, he'll study his opponents and find weaknesses, such as what he did to Aldo.
Not talking trash is a strategy because Aldo was susceptible to it, RDA isn't.
