Manziel Saga...Death Watch?

Thought-provoking article, "In Johnny Manziel, Failure as Entertainment," in the NY Times that comments on fans and schadenfreude*:

The N.F.L. draft — our coverage of it and our appetite for it — is a cultural phenomenon. But it also shows, as much as any sporting “event” in this country does, how fans and leagues — and even the players themselves in this age of social media — are willing to dehumanize the games they love, turning people into products and lives into entertainment.

...After the N.F.L. draft, if the players dare not meet the expectations heaped upon them by teams and fans when they were 21 or 22 years old, they are destined to become the butt of a long-running joke about busts. The misguided hype is seen as a character flaw of the player rather than a misjudgment by teams, analysts or fans — a broken promise in a one-sided relationship. http://www.nytimes.com/2016/04/25/s...human-cost-to-the-nfl-draft-machine.html?_r=0

*Per Forum rule, "schadenfreude" means taking pleasure in another's misfortune.

My favorite "Busts" are in the NBA. A bunch of those top picks fail every year. So many, I could not even list them if I tried.

As to the schadenfreude: it's the big leagues. They need to HTFU and cope. Hell, most of those busts make more money failing than all of us in this forum combined earn working for 50 years. I'm not crying any tears for them. That's for sure.

Arrested... Mug shot and Manziel tweets this:

Just thankful I had a shirt this time

He just doesn't get it, and I doubt he ever will. People who defend him wonder why no teams aren't interested in him anymore?? . He's arrested and he jokes about it? He still doesn't care nor gives a ****. The Tweet has since been deleted.

i like his defiant attitude
living life on his own terms
he will do well in the NFL
first team that has a QB go down will come calling

Defiant? --- I got another word for people who are drunks and beat women. I won't post it here.
Living on his own terms? --- That means being drunk and stupid? Hell of a life.
Well in the NFL? --- We'll never know. He's never going to get the chance. see below.
QB going down and he'll get a call? --- No, there's plenty of teams now WITHOUT a QB and they ain't calling. So he will not do well because there are no calls coming.

I agree. He was not good enough to call back up. And, even if he was...odds are slim anyone would touch him while he is under an indictment.

sorry

but he seems like a self absorbed little punk to me

his family had money, and he has always had things his way

life usually throws a few curves to guys like that....he isnt dealing with them well

he has an apparent alcohol problem, and maybe much more than that

i liked watching him play for the aggies....but he is near the bottom

he needs to get his **** together, and do it quickly

Absolutely. And again, he's arrested and he jokes about his mug shot?!?

He's a spoiled brat frat boy who's hasn't grown up and shows no signs of growing up. What team is going to waste time and money on a guy who has shown very little talent in the NFL, and who so far hasn't taken anything seriously.

All he cares about is partying and having a good time. If he was Tom Brady he'd get away with it, but with his limited talent he needs to work hard, study hard, and try hard. But he shows no signs of doing any of that.

I heard they are looking for a new gorilla in Cincinnati.

We're getting closer

Dallas police: Troubled QB Johnny Manziel reports hit-and-run crash

Yep, and Manziel's father weighs in again and said this:

"He's a druggie," Paul Manziel told ESPN's Josina Anderson. "It's not a secret that he's a druggie. I don't know what to say other than my son is a druggie and he needs help. He just hasn't seeked it yet. Hopefully he doesn't die before he comes to his senses. That's about all you can say. I don't know what else to say. I hate to say it but I hope he goes to jail. I mean, that would be the best place for him. So we'll see."

Pretty bad when a father HOPES his son ends up in jail.

Is anyone still wondering why he hasn't got another chance in the NFL? My God his OWN father wants him in jail!

I know a few parents and spouses who've reached that point when dealing with an addicted loved one. Jail is the only thing that will save his life at this point. His dad knows it.

It looks like dad has hit his own rock bottom here. It's good. He's no longer covering for the addict. That's actually important. It may help John.

What I wonder is whether attorney Hinton's e-mail was really sent accidentally because Sports Illustrated uses quote marks around "accidentally." I can't imagine what Hinton's strategy would be, though. Johnny Manziel?s lawyer ?accidentally? sends text to AP

Sometimes I feel very sorry for Paul Manziel; he is surely living with great regrets now, and I think that in addition to trying to manipulate public opinion, he's genuinely concerned for his son.

According to that SI link Manziel is 'reportedly preparing to play football again in 2016'? Him being drunk and stoned all the time is an interesting work-out routine.

Anyway if his lawyer release this text on purpose, or even by accident I'm wondering he could face repercussions.
Did he violate any client/Lawyer ethics.

Not from what I read. He was only saying that (to paraphrase) "I hope they don't ask him to pee in a bottle." He wasn't really revealing any private discussions.

Manziel suspended for 4 games.

My question is 'suspended from what'? He doesn't have a job.

will it not give the browns a basis to withhold four game's salary?

I don't think the Browns are paying him anymore. They released him. Baseball, yeah the player still gets paid. In football? I don't think the player gets paid.

i believe he was guaranteed thru 2016/17 season

I looked it up. You are correct.

So the Browns will save that money for the 4 games he's suspended. And they may save more, because the word is he might be suspended more games for the domestic violence indictment he is facing. Or the Browns may get out of paying him any of the guaranteed money because the suspension 'may' void the whole contract.

That could be serious. If that happens where will Manziel get his drug money? I doubt his family will be giving him anymore money.

Like all druggies, he'll run out of money eventually. THe sooner the better, in his case.
