Dave Mirra, BMX Bike Legend, Dies at the Age of 41 | Bleacher Report

Police in Greenville, North Carolina, announced BMX legend Dave Mirra died Thursday.Local authorities are still investigating the incident and noted an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound was the preliminary cause of death.

Ah damn.....this sucks. I remember watching Mirra do some amazing stuff in those early X-games.

Fell real bad for his family. This is sad news in every way.

No ****ing way.

As a sports guy, I was rather surprised I had no idea who this guy was, but it's a sad story.

Well he was never really as famous as say Tony Hawk if we are to make a valid comparison, but he was truly a legend.

I remember spending years playing his video games on the PS1 console, the Dave Mirra Freestyle BMX series. His and Tony Hawk's were two of my favorites.

Dave was a legend in the sport of BMX/Freestyle. He invented quite a few of the tricks you see today. He started his own Bike company several years back once he became a household name ( at least in the homes of fellow BMXers). I had the chance to talk to Dave at a Bicycle Stuntman Contest in Hoffman Estates Illinois back in the late 90's and he was a cool dude.

I can't know what was eating at Dave as it appeared from the outside he had life by the balls. What I can say is I know he took a lot of hits to the helmet over the years and can only think he was in constant pain. Maybe it was something else but I can think of no other reason to selfishly leave behind a family with two little girls.

My thoughts are with his family.

I hope he has found peace. RIP Dave.
