Should they still be called the San Francisco 49ers?

What should the 49ers be named?

Levi's Stadium is roughly 40 miles from San Francisco, and roughly an hour drive, given the traffic. Technically, it's in Santa Clara, but is also much closer to San Jose, which is actually a larger city than San Francisco, population-wise.

By maintaining the San Francisco identity, are they pushing the envelope of credibility, and should the team be renamed the San Jose 49ers?

If the Raiders stay, maybe. If they leave, definitely not. Personally I'd go with "Bay Area 49ers."

I do think the credibility is stretched thin, but I'm somewhat nostalgic and would stay with San Francisco.

San Francisco was also the historic jumping off point for the literal 49ers during the Gold Rush (those that came by sea), whereas San Jose was barely a blip in the wilderness. San Jose 49ers wouldn't even make sense. But then, you have the Utah Jazz...

Should it still be the NY Giants? The NY Jets? I don't think the Bills play in Buffalo.

I think there's a lot of teams who play in stadiums that aren't exactly where the emblem on their helmets say they are from.

the Washington Football Redskins play about a 45 minute subway ride away in Landover, MD.

The Bills play in Orchard Park, which is only about 15 miles from downtown Buffalo.

You're up that way. In your opinion is that close enough to still be 'Buffalo'? It's no big deal, just conversation. My God the Jets and Giants play in a whole different state.

Yeah, I think so. It definitely falls within the metro Buffalo area.

And the Dallas Cowboys are in Arlington, TX. I wonder what percentage of teams aren't actually based in their named city.

For those who couldn't... or wouldn't... grasp the concept... the question is less to do with simply playing in another nearby city, but the extraordinary distance combined with being near an even larger city than the one they represent.

They are still in the San Francisco Bay Area. You can blame San Fran for why 49ers are in Santa Clara..

Giants and Jets play in New Jersey, IIRC, but are still called New York. So, I have no issue with the 9ers being called SF.

No. Forty Whiners is more apropos.
